About this deal

The projects get gradually more difficult and each one will teach you many different skills so you can start making your own garments: tracing patterns, adapting them to fit your body, invisible zippers, buttonholes, darts and more. At the start of each project there is a breakdown of the skills you will use need and will learn, progressively adding to your knowledge base as you move through. The styling on her projects also means that there is a lot here for dressmakers who already have a good basic skills set. Her new-found joy in sewing her own clothes but lack of friends who could also sew led Tilly to start her blog, Tilly and the Buttons, so that she could share her experiences and swap tips with other would-be dressmakers.

I know this book has been out for a while, and there are quite a lot of reviews, but it's always new to someone. There are full scale pattern sheets in eight sizes ( sizing chart here) included in the back of the book, ready to trace off or trace straight onto your fabric. Love at First Stitch' will take any beginner who wants to learn to sew their own clothes on a skill building and jargon busting journey. I have found that have been able to extrapolate what I have learned from here to create simple patterns for my daughter, and produce dresses for her that look well-finished and fit properly. On a whim and feeling the urge to fill a creative void, Tilly Walnes signed up for a three-day dressmaking course.

Each chapter contains a project, beginning simple with a scarf and ending with an impressive lined dress. You will then be prompted to enter a password which can be found on the back of your printed copy of the book. This work by Tilly and the Buttons is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.

Within three years of first threading a needle, Tilly's blog is the most popular sewing blog in the UK and she appeared as a contestant in the first season of The Great British Sewing Bee , the only contestant to design and draft her own garment designs. I just need to learn how to get things done, and then I can move on to making things that do fit my style. As well as offering the sewing patterns, Tilly has suggestions for ways to vary the look or cut of the clothes and shows how these can be done. For example, they help us to remember your preferences and prevent you from needing to re-enter information you previously provided (for example, during member sign up). I like her technique pages which focus on one specific skill in detail (lining a garment and inserting an invisible zipper were two very useful ones). The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Between teaching dressmaking classes at sewing schools in both London and Birmingham, Tilly is developing her own line of dressmaking patterns.

What it does not teach you are skills for working with knit or stretchy fabrics, and advanced garment specific techniques.

I only made the skirt recently so would like to think I've moved beyond beginner, and was still learning. The printed patterns are: Margot pyjama bottoms, Delphine skirt, Megan dress, Mimi blouse, Lilou dress.

Regular readers will be familiar with my reviews of online classes, but as my sewing library expands I realise how handy it would have been to have a little more detail to hand before I bought some of my books. Tilly does always suggest variations to patterns, and this dress is a good start to get going with pattern hacks. This blouse requires you to sew buttons and buttonholes, which again are more key skills that beginners can master with practice and with the very helpful steps in the book. Each chapter presents practical tips and inspiration to guide you through creating a made-to-measure garment from one of the seven versatile and adaptable patterns included with the book, which can then be personalized to suit your individual style. It's perfect for complete beginners, but also has some great patterns in there for anyone with more developed skills.
