About this deal

Claire’s cat Rosie adapted fairly well to the new litter box cabinet enclosure, but “I still catch her every once and a while looking in the closet in the former spare bedroom for her old box,” Claire said. Keep your litter box clean. Cats dislike having to urinate and defecate in dirty litter. If their box isn't clean to their liking, they'll make use of other objects around the house. Clean out your litter box at least once a day. [18] X Research source All authors have contributed to develop the ideas presented in this manuscript. GV and FH designed and performed the experiment ( Box 1). GV has led the writing of the manuscript and all authors have contributed to individual sections. All authors have read and approved the final version of this manuscript. Funding Some cat parents reported urine leaking between the hood and bottom piece if their cats tend to spray.

If you have a multiple cat household, you may need to get another box. Cats sometimes become territorial about their litter boxes. Another box may encourage your cats to use their litter boxes instead of your plants. De Long 1 Self-cleaning: If you work long days, travel a lot or just despise cleaning the litter box, you may want to look into purchasing a self-cleaning enclosed litter box. While they can be a hefty investment, automatic litter boxes save a lot of time and energy. Indoor cats need a litter box to use the bathroom comfortably. Most litter boxes are plastic rectangular bins for containing litter, but there are many variations—top-entry models to keep litter contained, lowered entrances for senior cats, even automatic ones—that can improve quality of life for you and your cat.Whisker Litter-Robot 4 is a technology-powered litter box that takes away the need for daily scooping. The price tag is significantly higher than other litter boxes, but its ability to provide a fresh bathroom experience for multiple cats is unmatched.

Cats prefer to do their business in quiet, out-of-the-way places, like a bathroom or laundry room. If you have to put the box in a bedroom or living room, just make sure it’s in a quiet corner. If the box is put in a high traffic area, it could give your cat anxiety and lead to accidents. It is super easy to keep clean so there are no odors and it fits seamlessly in the decor of our house! We are so happy with how it turned out and we love that we can move it anywhere in the house as needed. This article was co-authored by Francine Miller. Take Ivy Kenton, a Manhattan resident and proud owner of cuddly Burmese beauty Mink. She shares her two-bedroom apartment with a roommate and out of respect, chooses to keep Mink’s litter box in her bedroom. According to design expert Kara, functional pieces work best for those who need to maximize space. “I love cat litter box options that come built into a bench or have a tabletop option. You can place a plant or some decor on top, or use in another needed functional way,” Kara advised.

Disentangle the interactions between litter-mediated vs. rhizosphere-mediated PSFs. We already know that rhizosphere pathogens or symbionts play a strong role in mediating PSFs ( Bennett et al., 2017; Semchenko et al., 2018) and litter-mediated PSFs are gaining more attention ( Freschet et al., 2013; Hobbie, 2015; Zhang et al., 2016; Manrubia et al., 2019), but interactions and their relative hierarchy of importance needs to be elucidated. For example, modeling work showed that rhizosphere-mediated PSFs may modify or override litter-mediated PSFs ( Ke et al., 2015). Also, microbes in the rhizosphere can immobilize the nutrients liberated from plant litter, thereby buffering litter-mediated PSFs via nutrient cycling ( Miki et al., 2010). These findings indicate the need to study rhizosphere- and litter-mediated PSFs in combination (see Box 1 for an example) to disentangle their interactions and relative importance. This will require full-factorial experiments where rhizosphere- and litter-mediated PSFs are manipulated. Within such studies it will be important to carefully consider spatial and temporal scales at which litter- and rhizosphere-mediated PSF effects occur, as these are not necessarily the same. In addition (stage-structured), models could be powerful to further explore how litter-mediated PSFs could operate ( Ke et al., 2015; Campbell et al., 2016). Odor control filter: Since covered litter boxes keep odors contained, they come equipped with odor control filters. Filters can be made of different materials, and replacements come at an additional cost. You may want to look more specifically into the type of filter the enclosed litter box uses if you have a certain budget in mind. It comes with a scoop and a bin for the scoop that easily attaches to external box. And for thorough cleaning with soap and water, two built-in handles make it easy to move.Make sure your cat's litter box is easily accessible. A box with sides that are too tall may be difficult for your cat to climb in and out of. If you keep your litter box in a space that's often closed off, your cat will not be able to find the box when necessary. Conversely, a cat may be embarrassed or scared to use a box that's out in the open or in area where there's a lot of noise or commotion.
