About this deal

I recommend not trying to make a Gin and Tonic with a genever. While some people do really enjoy it, genever differs quite a bit from gin. Just know that it’s not going to be the same thing. Overall, Bols Genever Napoleon's defeat in 1815 sparked buying interest in the company, and Rotterdam financier Gabriël Theodorus van 't Wout acquired the firm with the condition that the company permanently retain the Bols name. New ownership revitalized the company. A price list from 1820 shows over 300 varieties of liqueurs, bitters, elixirs and gins; it is possible that some of these were never produced, and were merely disinformation aimed at competitors. The Bols family expanded the distillery into several houses on the Rozengracht, and it was here that the man that the modern Lucas Bols Company is named after was born in 1652. Lucas Bols took over the management of his family’s business during the Dutch Golden Age. Bloomberg News; Business and Financial Desk (30 September 1999). "Diageo Sells Last of Four Liquor Brands". The New York Times. Late Edition – Final, Section C. pp.4, Column 3. ...Diageo sold Asbach, a German brandy, and Metaxa, the world's biggest-selling Greek liquor, to Bols Royal Distilleries, owned by the British buyout firm CVC Capital Partners Ltd. {{ cite news}}: |last= has generic name ( help) CS1 maint: multiple names: authors list ( link)

5. Boomsma Jonge Graan Jenever

Although “oude” refers to the old style of producing jenever, there is actually now a tendency to age the spirit in oak barrels too. Nevertheless, this is not a requirement for its production. Sorkin, Andrew Ross (23 August 2000). "Remy Cointreau to buy Bols". The New York Times. World Business Briefing: Europe . Retrieved 6 September 2007. Nowadays, jenever is served from the freezer like vodka. However, jonge jenever used to be drunk at room temperature with sugar and a spoon similar to absinthe. Bloomberg Business News (6 April 1995). "Bols Wessanen strategy to focus on food". The New York Times . Retrieved 5 September 2007. {{ cite news}}: |last= has generic name ( help) Although some of us call it the malty granddaddy of gin, genever is very much its own spirit. Because of its malt bill, it’s actually closer to whiskey than gin. Both genever and gin use juniper berry as a flavoring agent, but gin’s base is a neutral grain spirit mixed with botanicals, whereas genever is made with a mash of malted barley, rye, and corn. Like whiskey, genever can also be jonge (young), oude (old), and is sometimes aged in oak. But Bols also produces gin

We’ve already covered some of the health benefits of gin in its own dedicated guide, which are actually the same due to the similar production process. This mostly consists of juniper’s unique properties given that it’s a natural antioxidant. Traditionally, jenever was produced using malt grain in a relatively similar way to whisky, which results in a smooth and aromatic flavours with unsurprisingly malty flavours. The is still practised today and is referred to as oude jenever. After two short-lasting joint ventures with first Heineken and later Wessanen – and then a buyout by CVC Capital Partners – Bols was taken over in 2000 by Rémy Cointreau. The word itself is a bit of a cognate. it translates to “corn wine,” and refers to the high amount of malt wine present in this product (>51%). This mean it’s less than 100% Maltwine products like Old Duff’s and more than Jonge (5-15% maltwine) and Oude (min. 15%) styles of genever.Additionally, juniper is diuretic, which means that it helps flush out bacteria and toxins in your system. As it can also help with stomach acid production, it can even help as a digestif. Gluten, Carbs, & Calories In Jenever Firstly, jenever is served in a stemmed tulip glass similar to Polish karczmiak flutes for vodka. This is filled until the spirit’s service tension allows it to rise above the glass’ brim without spilling. Traditionally, the first sip is taken by leaning forward with the glass on the table to avoid spilling it. Like many other brands, Bols has expanded their genever selection. Beyond the original, you can find barrel-aged bottles, which are rested in French Limousin oak casks for 18 months. You will find the gin to be very aromatic and filled with rich flavors, making it a true delight for any gin lover.
