About this deal

Super Mario 3D All-Stars bundles together three of Mario’s most iconic three-dimensional adventures: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. To someone who has never played these games before, the value here is probably enough, but it is infuriating that Nintendo couldn't do this properly.

I accept there's always some personal enjoyment aspect to reviews, but if you aren't taking in to account value, technical standards, user accessibility options, and effort put in to the product, then what's the point of attaching a score to a review. Marvel Comics of the 1990s which I remind you caused the near-death of a beloved American institution! More recently, Nintendo has also put out a limited-edition Mario-themed Nintendo Switch alongside the release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. It commemorates the 35th anniversary of Nintendo's Super Mario franchise, with high-definition ports of Super Mario 64 (1996), Super Mario Sunshine (2002), and Super Mario Galaxy (2007). Much easier to remake all three games of those trilogies for a single package than it would be 64, Sunshine and Galaxy.

Octane IGN actually just posted more of an informative article on the technical aspects of it, rather than a review. In the short term having digital games being cheaper sounds great, but once the publisher control full distribution of a product from conception to the end-user that power can be abused. I have many versions of Mario 64 through the original, Virtual Console, DS and such, but to be able to play that Rumble Pak version of the game without shelling out for a Japanese copy will be a nerdy treat. You'll notice Nintendo never "devalues" their product and subsequently offers games with limited or free DLC. The text and HUD have been given an upgrade too, meaning everything all looks nice and crisp here as well.

Those two numbers are both review scores, but one is for a game and one is for a product; they can't be compared because they are inconsistent. I may be alone on this but it would have been cool to see a physical Version of the classic Super Mario All Stars with Super Mario World bundled in as well. They are selling at a fraction of what they did in the 90s and they are selling about as well as they were in the 70s. EMI Yeah, but they're expensive to watch them live, and in person, first time round, not on DVD 20 years after they're first played.

We’ve had an absolute blast playing through these three gems all over again, especially now they look sharper than ever.

In so many ways, it feels like an opportunity was missed here to truly celebrate these incredible games and update them for a new audience. Replaying my favorite Mario game, Sunshine (yes, aware I'm in the minority over considering this the best Mario game), especially in handheld, has been like a dream come true for me. Richnj No, I did not say they do not care about quarterly reports, but this is how Nintendo has done business for 20+ years. Although it's probably an extremely unpopular opinion, Super Mario Sunshine is by far my favourite Mario game to date, followed by 64 and I look forward to seeing how it goes on switch.I would have loved to have also played Galaxy 2 but I think it would have unbalanced the collection and there is already a lot of gaming hours on offer. Plus regardless of how limited (or not) this game is, it won’t have the demand that original copies do. Gently shake a Joy-Con controller to activate Mario's Spin ability or pass a Joy-Con controller to a friend for some extra help in Co-Star Mode*. I think a 9/10 for this minimal effort collection was far too generous, both for those if us who've played them and for those who never have.
