About this deal

Not the police," he said. "To recover the–er–what we want to recover will almost inevitably invoke taking proceedings in the law courts and we know so little. We suspect, but we do not know."

Tea was brought in. A hearty meal of scones, crumpets, sandwiches and three kinds of cake. The younger members of the party appreciated the tea. Colonel Lacey came in last, remarking in a noncommittal voice: "Hey, tea? Oh yes, tea." What's happened?" she cried in a breathless voice. "Desmond just came rushing into the house. He said something about Bridget being killed and then he rattled the telephone but it was dead. He couldn't get an answer. He said the wires must have been cut. He said the only thing was to take a car and go for the police. Why the police? . . ." Desmond Lee-Wortley wheeled round. "What on earth–Are you accusing me? ME? You're crazy! Why on earth should I want to kill the girl?" These were the facts that could not possibly be made public without the most dire consequences. The ruby was something more than a ruby, it was a historical possession of great significance, and the circumstances of its disappearance were such that any undue publicity about them might result in the most serious political consequences. That pleasant young David," said Poirot to himself, "he is worried, unhappy. It will do him no harm to have a night's really sound sleep. And now, let us see what will happen?"We spent a lot of money on making the house comfortable to live in," said Mrs Lacey. "We were able to sell some land. Ripe for development, I think they call it. Fortunately right out of sight of the house on the other side of the park. Really rather an ugly bit of ground with no nice view, but we got a very good price for it. So that we have been able to have as many improvements as possible."

Miss Marple has a hypothesis: that the Miss Greenshaw that Louise met over her two days work was actually Mrs Cresswell in disguise. Miss Greenshaw was unconscious at the time that she was stabbed with the arrow, and the dying person on the lawn that Louise saw was Mrs Cresswell with a false arrow. The first "policeman" who arrived at the house was really Nathaniel Fletcher, Mrs Cresswell's accomplice. Fletcher is an actor who plays the policeman in a staging of the play by James Barrie, A Kiss for Cinderella, and wears his costume from the play. A few minutes later, he appears at the house as himself, acting unaware of the death. What better way to welcome the start of the festive season than with a selection of Christmassy tales from our favourite little Belgian detective. Described as “an indulgence of my own” by Agatha Christie, The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding is the perfect read to get you into the Christmas spirit.
