About this deal

Today is Bi Visibility Day, a day that has been celebrated since 1999. This is a day to recognise bisexual history, celebrate the bisexual community, and talk about the issues and experiences that bisexual people face. While bisexual people have come a long way since 1999, there are numerous issues that still persist, issues that are rarely highlighted or discussed within the LGBTQ+ community. Thing with moderation is like that. Really the question isn’t about “siding with bigotry”– it is about authority and how to handle that. Who has the authority, can that be critizied and so on. Obvious violations are obvious, that isn’t interesting, things become more difficult and important when we talk about comments that are kind of on the edge. We can identify all these problems with what might be called the fallacy of decontextualized measurement, the idea that science proceeds by crisp distinctions modeled after asocial phenomena, such as unambiguous medical diagnoses (the presence or absence of streptococcus or the color change of a litmus paper). Seeking an on–off decision, normalizing a base rate to 50 percent, and, most problematically, stripping a phenomenon of its social context all give the feel of scientific objectivity while creating serious problems for generalizing findings to the world outside the lab or algorithm. Gay and bisexual men who learn they have HIV can start and stay on HIV treatment, get the virus down to an undetectable level (become virally suppressed), live long and healthy lives, and prevent sexual transmission to others.

First, simply consider the possibility that someone might be bisexual rather than either straight or gay. I’m happy that comments like Daniel Lakeland have spent time cleaning this up, but I firmly believe it’s the responsibility of the people who invite comment to frame the comments in a way that doesn’t hurt extremely marginalized communities. We (abstractly, in this case I) have the ability to remove or modify comments and we (I) are responsible to our readers. There have been significant advances in HIV prevention and treatment but missed testing opportunities in healthcare settings are preventing some gay and bisexual men from knowing their HIV status and benefitting from these advances. More HIV testing is needed to prevent new HIV infections and improve the health outcomes of gay and bisexual men with HIV.

Today is Bi Visibility Day and we've asked Vaneet Mehta, a bi activist, to tell us what it means to him. This year, Vaneet's hashtag #BisexualMenExist trended worldwide and helped countless people see themselves reflected in society. Walters, M., Chen, J. and Breiding, M. (2011) ‘National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey 2010: findings on victimisation by sexual orientation’. Bisexual men said they were turned on by both sets of videos — but their genitals responded to one or the other, not to both. Being a bisexual man isn't easy - something Vaneet Mehta knows all too well. After spending more than a decade figuring out his identity, Vaneet's coming out was met with questioning, ridicule and erasure. This experience inspired Vaneet to create the viral #BisexualMenExist campaign, combatting the hate and scepticism m-spec (multi-gender attracted spectrum) men encounter, and helping others who felt similarly alone and trapped. Bailey and I have this approach that sexuNow if you want, you can insist the real conclusion is the penultimate paragraph: “This is a much bigger problem than a data analysis that is making a bunch of arbitrary decisions and not accounting for the heterogeneity in the data. It is a question of whether these experiments are appropriate methods to demonstrate the existence of bisexual men.” But “this” refers—unless the writing is truly messed up—to a fictional example devised in another paper by the author condemning the stupidity of using experimental methods. And this context reinforces the reading of the apparent conclusion that asking is reliable.

About us

We experience constant discrimination, are robbed of our spaces and are denied our existence. And yet people still believe that bisexual people have it easier. They think of bisexuality as a duality, a combination of gay and straight. They believe that our partial straightness gives us a level of privilege, but as all these statistics (as well as many others) show, this couldn’t be further from the case. This biphobia and bi-erasure is even received from others within the LGBTQ+ community. It can make it extremely hard to exist in LGBTQ+ safe spaces, which are decidedly unsafe for bisexual people. Caitlin Ryan, director of the Family Acceptance Project at San Francisco State University, added that society doesn't help navigate the conversation around male bisexuality. Just out of curiosity: Do you generally find comments like “Could you maybe [bleep] off?” contribute to the sense that a space is “welcoming”?”
