About this deal

As the last few drams transferred from bottle to glass, I flicked open my laptop and punched in Craigellachie to Google. Overall: A fairly one-dimensional malt that is somewhat marred by my least-favorite flavor note (banana).

uk accepts no liability for inaccuracies or misstatements about products by manufacturers or other third parties. One of the most exciting and indeed the oldest dram I tasted during 2019 was the Craigellachie 51 yo single malt whisky. It’s also a heavy spirit in that it is thick and oily even at the standard official bottling strength of 46% ABV. In the event of any safety concerns or for any other information about a product please carefully read any instructions provided on the label or packaging and contact the manufacturer.

That said, some say the packaging is quite stylish and that it'd be a perfect winter drink neat or with ice. I got the impression that no matter what budget I arrived with, I’d have received the same attention anyway. The prospect of chatting whisky in my current phase of rampant burrowing into whiskyland, was palpable. It's been relegated to hot toddy fodder; it's not bad with honey and lemon but an expensive dram for mixing. Tonight, with porridge for dinner (bicycle night) it’s a little sharper and the caramel threads are more subdued – a drop of water brings it back nicely. I think this is one of those cases where it’s a shame that you didn’t have a full bottle to review, because this is one that has a lot going on. Speyside malt meets rare brandy finesse in this single malt whisky, offering notes of baked apples dusted with cinnamon and caramel shortcake offset by signature syrupy pineapples and fiery bonfire night aromas. The nose follows suit, with sweet floral and fruity notes, a touch of pineapple and mango, while the palate opens up into symphony of sweet, creamy notes balanced by smoke and leather with a dash of crisp acidity. An eternal creative tinkerer, whisky was hidden from him until fairly recently, but it lit an inspirational fire. They mention that it has a real citrus flavour, it's smooth with great notes and spice, and has smoky finish. A very consistent finish, comprising the good notes from the nose and palate, but without much bitterness. In Dramface’s efforts to be as inclusive as possible we recognise the need to capture the thoughts and challenges that come in the early days of those stepping inside the whisky world.

Would the Craigellachie be the same, or would there be a clearer difference between the two 13 year old expressions? The 13 year old standard release was reviewed by a relative newcomer to whisky on the Dramface review site and found to be a welcome change from the standard “approachable” malts. DISTILLERY CHARACTER: Craigellachie is an unapologetic and distinct whisky, robust and muscular in flavour with a hint of pineapple. The use of worm tubs, wooden washbacks, and a distinctive sulfuring process during malting make Craigellachie spirit weighty – some say waxy – and fruity.
