About this deal
While it was fairly easy with previous generations of CPUs for coolers to keep the processor well under TJ max (the maximum temperature a CPU can sustain before throttling) in demanding workloads, this is no longer realistically possible on current generation CPUs without extreme cooling (or enabling power limits). Thermalright can easily improve this cooler compatibility if they provide a way for users to install the cooler in Up/Down orientation, which you can't on AM4.
While it was fairly easy with previous generations of CPUs for coolers to keep the flagship i9 processor well under TJ max (the maximum temperature a CPU can sustain without throttling) in tough workloads, this is no longer realistically possible on current generation CPUs (the 13900K specifically) without extreme cooling (or enabling power limits). Long story short, if you use a left handed A4 sandwich style case with Gigabyte board on AM4 platform, this cooler will be a headache to install. The IS-55 and Thermalright AXP120-X67 were tested with their included 15mm fans, the Noctua A12x25 and Noctua A12x15 fans. The Noctua L12 GE was tested with the Noctua A12x25 and A12x15 fans. All fans were run at 100% PWM.
Modern AMD & Intel CPUs are designed to run fairly hot without any problems– up to 95 degrees C for AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs, and up to 100 degrees C for Intel’s Core i9-13900K. Similar behavior has been standard in laptops for years due to cooling limitations. The DB meter was 30cm from front center of the chassis facing directly towards the front of the chassis, and 19cm high from the desk top. Sound DBA measurements were taken when the motherboard chipset fan was not running.
Thermalright also includes fan clips for standard 120mm fans for those who want to use a stronger, full sized fan, for additional cooling performance. Testing MethodologyProduct specification】dimensions: 120(L)x120(W)x67(H)mm (4.86x4.72x2.6 inch); low-profile CPU cooler (67mm total height); Heat sink material: Aluminum fin on copper bottom, CPU cooler is equipped with metal fasteners of Intel & AMD platform to achieve better installation. The IS-55 fan is the quietest of all the tested fans – impressive. With the A12x25 fan installed on the IS-55, the cooling performance improved with only a slight increase in noise. Excellent performance for such a small cooler. When I began testing coolers on Intel’s Core i9-12900K, I found that some products that cooled the i9-10900K well struggled in some scenarios when paired with the Alder Lake CPU – and Raptor Lake is even more difficult to cool in these situations. While in the past a CPU hitting its peak temperature was cause for concern, enthusiasts are going to have to learn to accept high temperatures as “normal” while running demanding workloads with Raptor Lake and Ryzen 7000 CPUs.
