Like the pliers on the other new multi-tool Gerber is releasing, the Truss (reviewed here), the NXT has spring-loaded pliers. They’re needle nose pliers with a straight section and a bolt/nut gripper section. Wire cutters are included as you would expect and wire strippers as well. These have all the same functions as the Truss and looking at the 2, they look identical. Nothing wrong with that, just a bit of part sharing across the 2 new models. What tools can you expect to find on a standard multitool? The list can vary widely, but it should include a screwdriver (with a Phillips and flat-head driver, at least), pliers, scissors and possibly a knife or two. Most will also have a bottle opener or something you can use as one. It’s a good bet that this tool is the one that will see the most actual use among weekend warriors. In my humble opinion, the Gerber Suspension NXT is a versatile multi-tool that’s designed for anyone who values practicality, portability, and preparedness. Its alluring array of outboard tools, compact butterfly design, and quality stainless steel build make it a solid toolbox companion for many outdoorsy types, DIY enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates having a mini toolset at the ready.

The knife is a combo blade with half straight and half serrated edges. Some people love combo blades as it gives them the option to use the part of the blade that best suits the cutting job without using the real estate 2 separate blades would take. I can take or leave a combo blade. Serrated blades are good at cutting things like rope because the serrations grip the rope surface allowing it to cut more easily. That’s true but a straight blade will do the same thing as a serrated knife if it’s sharp because it’s sharp enough to “grip” the rope.

I’m sure they will still cut some small things but the mouth doesn’t open very wide so you won’t get a lot of anything in one cut. There are a ton of other multi-tools out there, and brands like Leatherman and Victorinox have models upon models that make it confusing to figure out exactly what to get. Whether you are looking for a gift for an enthusiast of DIY, motor mechanics, camping or just someone who loves the outdoors the Gerber Suspension NXT Multi Tool is the perfect gift. It’s functional, practical, strong and tough and comes with an extensive guarantee. Having spent a week trialling this tool and putting all the different parts through their paces I can endorse it 100%. It’s certainly made my Christmas shopping easy ill happily just buy everyone a multi tool! You can even have it personalised (laser engraved) with your name for a few pounds. The Truss and Suspension add functions while reducing weight from Gerber’s ‘best-selling’ predecessor. Something that isn’t small is the Philips screwdriver which has a full-size head and a reasonably long shaft. Thumbs up for the Philips. The other tools are standard and commonly used tools for a multi-tool of this size.Truss and Suspension Phillips driver. The Truss has a fully-formed Phillips driver. A much welcomed addition! Not every multi-tool, even those from our favorite brands, are winners. These are models we've tried and don't like as much (or at all). Save your money and skip 'em. The pliers have the sort of functions you would expect on a full-sized multi-tool so nothing to complain about there. They are also spring loaded which apparently reduce hand fatigue. I don’t know about you but I’ve never had hand fatigue using pliers before but you might appreciate it.

Truss and Suspension plain-edge blades. The Truss changes the blade shape and adds a bit of length. A much welcomed change! The benchmark qualities that made the original a success still remain, now optimized for the everyday carry consumer. The focus has shifted from the industrial and professional landscape to the commuter, weekend warrior, or hobbyist. The secondary tools are headed by the Phillips head screwdriver with it’s fully formed “3D” head. That just means it’s got a head like the Phillips screwdriver you have in your toolshed rather than one of those flattened “2D” style Phillips you see on a lot of other multi-tools. The other screw management tools included are small, medium and large flathead screwdrivers. Another thing to note is that the Truss fixes the biggest issue on the Suspension. The Suspension has suffered BADLY with broken plier-stops, whether the screws break or the stop breaks, the Suspension had that weakest link. The Truss fixes this by incorporating the plier-stops into the handle-frame themselves. Another much welcomed addition to the new Gerber Truss.
