About this deal

This is a poignant novel by Dawn French which is told through the eyes of a mother and her two teenage children. Overall, the novel is lighthearted, sweet and it makes good light weekend reading but if you're looking for drama, suspense and an almighty crescendo.

Man sollte jedoch wirklich keinesfalls mit den Erwartungen daran gehen, dass einen die Spannung zum umblättern zwingen wird. In short, I found A Tiny Bit Marvellous to be wildly entertaining, extremely heartfelt, and fine diversion. Further Reading Suggestion: If you like the sound of this book, you may also enjoy Dawn French’s excellent autobiography Dear Fatty.I had high hopes for this book, but found it sadly lacking in originality, laughs and an engaging story. But soon she started to irritate me as she really does have the blinkers on when it comes to her family and becomes increasingly self-centred. In her career spanning three decades, she has been nominated for six BAFTA Awards and also won a Fellowship BAFTA along with her best friend Jennifer Saunders. Then there is Pamela, Mo’s mother, who wisely dispenses advice on sex, a survivalist receptionist and several other odd characters thrown into the mix.

She is best-known for starring in and writing her comedy sketch show, French and Saunders, alongside her comedy partner Jennifer Saunders, and for playing the lead role of Geraldine Granger in the sitcom The Vicar of Dibley.

Naturally there's a wise and all-knowing grandmother whom all of them love and turn to for advice, a woman who manages to be hip while remaining empathic and right there with the home-baked goodies (recipes at the end of the book! Their relationships with each other which can be warm, loving, frustrating, funny, annoying and angry either separately or all at once is typical of family confined to sharing the same living space. The scenario of a desperately dysfunctional family, composed entirely of eccentric characters constantly misunderstanding each other, was certainly amusing and the language colourful. Not so much a narrated story as a series of diary extracts from each of the characters where we learn of their highs and lows, faults and failings, talents, hopes and dreams. Only one of them is on goodreads so Randi, if you're reading this, I'll try to be a little nicer in the meeting but here I'm going to be brutally honest.

I still don't understand how a book can be a 'No1 Besteller' before it has even been published and placed on shelves. Her narrative is strong in that without even looking at the chapter headings, you can tell that Dora is speaking. There's Mo, the tired child psychiatrist mother, Dora, the Facebook obsessed 17 year old, and Peter, the precocious 16 year old obsessed with Oscar Wilde. I ask you, how was she ever supposed to make anyting of herself with that ghastly moniker as her albatross? Well, the book had a few moments where I laughed out loud, a lot of moments that amused me, but mostly I didn’t find it funny. I thought the characterisation of these characters was excelent and I ended up really caring about them. Htjela sam provjeriti kakva je Dawn French kao pisac, s obzirom da mi je u seriji Vikar iz Dibleya bila odlična.

I did wonder whether Dawn had decided to make Peter a rather unusual teenager to provide some respite from Dora’s angst, or she would have had two angst-ridden teenagers on her hands which would probably be just a bit too much for most readers. Synopsis: This first novel by Dawn French is told through the eyes of a mother and her two teenage children. I am not usually interested in books in the comedy genre, although I do enjoy human interest stories. So it might bet better towards the end, but I skipped ahead quite a bit to see if it improves, and it doesn't.She has recently split up with her long-standing boyfriend of six weeks, Sam, and is planning to become famous thanks to the upcoming X Factor auditions. Realising that she's no longer looking as young as she used to and starting to feel the effects of old age and turning into her own mother, Mo is pretty two dimensional but, unfortunately, is the most developed of the three main characters.
