About this deal

They live in the Sixth Kingdom of Orea since Midas married Malina, the rightful heir to the throne of Highbell.

She treats everyone, from her lover, to her guards, to all the citizens she's responsible for, like absolute trash. I actually liked that Auren was determined to find a way out of Midas's hold herself, and spent much of the book on that. Rip has gotten beneath her skin, and she's no longer content living life behind in a cage, even if the bars are plated in gold.I'm actually glad Kennedy made this series realistic even at the expense of Auren's inability to renounce Midas right away and even her failure to instantly transform into the strong warrior we're all impatient for her to be. Being born into power doesn't grant you charisma or automatic leadership skills and the right to continue to be in power. Much of this book revolves around them working to figure out their relationship from there, and I liked that because I didn't want to see her jump into another relationship without questioning some important things, to make sure she is protecting herself and importantly developing a sense of self away from a relationship. Auren's character growth continues to be amazing, and she is back under Midas' thumb, but this time she sees every interaction for the abuse they are, and she is finally ready to get away from Midas for good. It is believed that Midas Gold-Toucher her as it's believed that he has the power to turn everything he wants into gold.

We tell ourselves twisted lies to tangle around or wicked truths, all so that we can get caught in the bind and not have to face bare regrets. I also always imagined him to be the miser in the poems at the end, where the miser had to give something up to the gold vine in exchange for riches, and it seemed like we kept getting hints that he played some background role in having gold created (but it didn't look like it), so I was disappointed that that parallel didn't go anywhere. She has to unearth and discover for herself that he was always the villain in her story, but was simply disguised as her hero. FINALLY - I was getting so sick of her deluding herself about the deceptive, self-serving, inherently weak King Midas. I love it when the characters look like they could kill you, will actually kill you, but are also cinnamon rolls. Leading the army is Commander Rip, a notorious warrior whose name is whispered in taverns and street corners all over the six kingdoms.
