Ceramics and Illustration - Modern Clay - Birmingham

Ceramics and Illustration (10-4pm)Join ceramicist Sophie McKinney and artist Sarah Taylor Silverwood to learn how to make two pots, and develop a design for your pots using a range of ceramics illustration techniques and materials.Over this day long course, participants will spend the morning learning how to make pots using different building techniques, inspired by practical demonstrations from ceramicist Sophie Mckinney. She will look at different ways to construct a pot, including slab building, pinch pots and coiling. In the afternoon, artist Sarah Taylor Silverwood will demonstrate ways to develop a design for your pots, and then show different ways to transfer an illustration to clay. They will bring a range of examples of their own work, and use the Modern Clay library for inspiration. You will finish the day with at least two finished pots designed and made by you, which we will fire and glaze ready for you to collect. You are welcome to come along on the day with ideas for the sort of vessel you would like to create - e.g. pen pots, plant pots, cups, vases - and/or ideas for your designs, but don’t feel you have to as we will have plenty of books and pots for inspiration! If you have any questions please get in touch.Additional information:- This course is suitable for all levels and abilities.- Your work will be fired and glazed ready for you to collect.- Adults' courses are 18+ unless otherwise stated.- Lunch is not provided, but there are a range of cafes nearby and you are welcome to bring a packed lunch.- It's easier to do ceramics with short nails so if you have time give them a trim before you come!- Modern Clay is situated at Minerva Works, a complex of various art spaces and businesses, a short walk from Birmingham city centre, on Fazeley Street in Digbeth. - Unfortunately we do not currently have a working lift.
