About this deal

American women expect to find in their husbands a perfection that English women only hope to find in their butlers. ― W. Somerset Maugham Quotes on Perfection being Overrated What I will say is that the only reason I actually brought this was because I am a Roy Grace fan. Had the book been written by somebody else, I may have given it a wide berth. I am extremely glad that I didn't do that as this book opened my eyes. The writing was brilliant, the tension high and the underlying `horrible feeling' I had didn't leave me all through the book. I think for me one of the main underlying thoughts I had all through the books is that one day, this could actually happen. What would I do if I was in their shoes? Decisions that I previously thought would be easy to make, have now left me feeling like I didn't have the first clue. Even when we strive for perfection , life is nothing more than an attempt to achieve it through a series of greater or smaller imperfections. ― Peter Prange One of the most thought-provoking thrillers I've read. Scary too, not so much in the blood and gore sense, but the in the implications of genetic engineering of the human species to a level far beyond what eugenics in the conventional sense might ever achieve. When the book was first started, designer babies were still a subject for science fiction, but judging by scientific advances made over the past 10 years this fiction could so easily become fact. There is no reason to believe that violent conflict between science and fanatical religious beliefs will be any a less of a threat in the future as it has been in the past. In many ways, poorer health outcomes for perfectionists aren’t that surprising. “Perfectionists are pretty much awash with stress. Even when it’s not stressful, they’ll typically find a way to make it stressful,” says Gordon Flett, who has studied perfectionism for more than 30 years and whose assessment scale developed with Paul Hewitt is considered a gold standard

Plus, he says, if your perfectionism finds an outlet in, say, workaholism, it’s unlikely you’ll take many breaks to relax – which we now know both our bodies and brains require for healthy functioning. But in reality, this will take some serious self-reflection on your part and, most probably, help from a certified mental health professional.

10. You see people making stupid choices all the time.

Naomi becomes pregnant with not one but two babies and with the series of bizarre events leading to their birth, we, the readers, know something is amiss. When the babies start behaving abnormally, the couple reaches out to the good doctor only to find he'd disappeared. Take a look at the online therapy service from BetterHelp.com – you’ll be able to talk to a trained and experienced therapist from the comfort of your own home at a time that suits you. Here’s that link again if you’d like more information on this process. Find good people and leave the bad ones.” But I say, find the good in people and ignore the bad in them. Because no one is perfect. ― Unknown This was definitely an thought provoking idea for a story and raised the important issue of parents just wanting the best for their child.

The writing itself is fine but that's about it and I couldn't recommend this unless you're a big Peter James fan. The description of the science behind the designer babies is reasonably wooly, in her diary Naomi Klaeesson writes: 'disease genes will be removed or disabled by altering their cytokines and others will be programmed to self-destruct'. This vagueness is to be expected, as much of it is hypothetical. However the process of testing and selecting embryos is accurately described. One other element of this story is the crime/terrorism group that crops up fairly early into the story, This was a needless waste of time in my opinion and was purely there to add drama, because all the major events of the book could still have been met without including chaotic, sometimes a bit ridiculous, plots and sub-plots. I definitely think this could have been cut, so this is the major reason why this book isn't getting a higher rating despite just how much I really enjoyed it. Measure not by the scale of perfection the meager product of reality. ― Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller Having a child should be some of the happiest times in a parents lives, but for one, John and Naomi are still trying to recover from the fact that even though they only wanted one child they have twins, also they have to get used to the fact that Phoebe and Luke are unlike any other child of their age. That, of course, hinders them from the very success that they want to achieve. In his 60-plus studies focusing on athletes, for example, Hill has found that the single biggest predictor of success in sports is simply practice. But if practice isn’t going well, perfectionists might stop. To start with I have to admit I did find it a bit slow going but once I started getting into it, I was well and truly gripped. Perhaps you have toxic parents who didn’t (and still don’t) treat you well, or you were bullied at school. Phoebe and Luke Klaesson were indeed vivid examples of what Perfect People could be if there is or is soon to be one. The twins right from toddler began showing signs of perfection to their parents and by the time they were two years old, Phoebe the female already had her first menstrual experience, not to mention the twins' anti-social behavior towards everyone including kids their age as well as their parents. Some of those criteria, particularly pressure from parents and perfectionistic concerns, also were correlated with more suicide attempts.

O great creator of being grant us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives. ― Jim Morrison Faced with failure, “perfectionists tend to respond more harshly in terms of emotions. They experience more guilt, more shame,” says Hill. They also experience more anger. The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself. ― Anna Quindlen

I recall reading this whilst on holiday in Croatia, having already finished all the books I’d taken with me I had a look in the hotel library. But you can shift your thoughts and beliefs enough to move from “I don’t like people” to “I don’t like many people.” If a man should happen to reach perfection in this world, he would have to die immediately to enjoy himself. ― Josh Billings Esame rūšis žmonių, kuri tikisi aplenkti šviesą ir daryti daug kitų dalykų, kurių mūsų protėviai negalėjo nė įsivaizduoti, bet neišmokome, kaip įveikti neapykantą savo širdyse, mes esame rūšis, kurios atstovai savo problemas sprendžia tik mėtydamiesi akmenimis.

Then an even more ominous threat gets interwoven: a religious cult on a crusade to take out said couple and their "designer" babies. Dunkley DM, Starrs CJ, Gouveia L, Moroz M. Self-critical perfectionism and lower daily perceived control predict depressive and anxious symptoms over four years. J Couns Psychol. 2020;67(6):736-746. doi:10.1037/cou0000425 Nobody’s perfect. We’re all just one step up from the beasts and one step down from the angels. ― Jeannette Walls “I (may) not be Perfect” Quotes Nothing is permanently perfect. But there are perfect moments and the will to choose what will bring about more perfect moments. ― Mary Balogh Moreover, the relationship between parent and child here is infuriatingly inconsistent – neither parent is really shown to bond with their children as such, and Naomi in particular behaves as if she actively dislikes or even fears them, but suddenly when required for the purposes of the plot, they suddenly begin to behave completely differently towards them. I fully understand that the parent-child relationship is a complex one, but I don’t find the sudden turnaround in Naomi’s maternal instincts particularly credible. Other inconsistencies include the claim that the ‘new people’ abhor violence, which seems deeply out-of-kilter with the children’s ability to butcher their own pets or inspire outright terror in the other toddlers at their playgroup.
