About this deal

BEN CLANTON is the New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of the Narwhal and Jelly series, whose picture books include Mo’s Mustache; Vote for Me! An exciting first volume in an attractive series of graphic novels for junior readers, this tale successfully combines science fiction, humour, family difficulties and environmental concerns in an accessible and entertaining format. In the final chapter, Jelly is confused when he finds his friend reading an ‘imagination book’, as all the pages are blank. The first subject is Wafflematics, in which Narwhal and Jelly calculate the number of waffles needed to feed the class.

With a mixture of fun facts, nonsense stories and an eccentric narwhal song, this quirky chapter book is ideal for junior readers who enjoy something a bit different. In the first story, Narwhal reveals his superhero alter-ego and enlists Jelly to help him figure out what his superpower is. Since my 14 year old is a complete stick in the mud, I will just have to wait for friends to have new little beasties so I can live vicariously through them. I may be slightly biased because I'm fond of narwhals, but this graphic novel about said narwhal and his jellyfish friend is soo cute! In the hilarious eighth book of this blockbuster graphic novel series adapted for audio, Narwhal and Jelly celebrate the spookiest time of the year — Halloween — with a super twist!

I actually liked Volume 2 a smidgen more than the first; while both books center the importance of empathy and friendship, Super Narwhal and Jelly Jolt goes a step further, teaching kids that we all have a superpower that can change the world for the better. While Narwhal has his outfit and super identity figured out he doesn’t know what his power is unfortunately. Ever-sensible Jelly isn’t so sure that’s the best idea, but is all for Narwhal trying new things (instead of just eating waffles all the time, no matter how delicious waffles are). All you need to do now is draw in Narwhal’s eyes and a happy grin using a black marker pen and it’s done! Humor goes a long way in aiding both reading comprehension and discovery (remember the first time you got a joke in a book that wasn't about jokes? There's the impulsive, fun one and the logical, more down-to-earth (or down to ocean bottom, I suppose) one. Happy-go-lucky Narwhal and no-nonsense Jelly find their inner superheroes in three new under-the-sea adventures. I received an advance reading copy of this book from Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for an honest review. I'm not sure that the leveled reader audience needs yet another series about a pair of friends, but nonetheless they're lucky to have this one, and so is my inner child.

When he meets a jellyfish, they both assume they are imagining one another as neither of them has come across such bizarre-looking animaL before. And finally, Narwhal and Jelly read the best book ever — even though it doesn’t have any words…or pictures! To make your narwhal paper plate craft you will need a paper plate, some grey paint (I made mine by mixing some white paint with a drop of black), scissors, some glue or double sided sellotape, plain card and a black pen. In this third book, Narwhal and Jelly star in three new stories about trying new things, favorite foods and accepting who we are.The simple text and illustrations are paired with beautifully subdued colors that allow the reader to focus on the (surprisingly) expressive characters as they react to each other and their environment.

Jelly is super easy to make – you’ll need another paper plate for him, some blue paint, blue paper or card, glue and a black pen. When we got these books I read the first book ( Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea) to both my kids as a bedtime story and then I discovered my son (8) reading Super Narwhal and Jelly Jolt to my daughter who is 5. NYT-bestselling creator of the Dog Man and Captain Underpants series, Dav Pilkey Narwhal is a happy-go-lucky narwhal. And finally, Narwhal and Jelly read the best book ever – even though it doesn’t have any words…or pictures! He tries to be super strong, and even tries to fly (under the sea), but he doesn't have those super powers either. Readers will easily see why Narwhal’s so excited to meet Otty, a boisterous explorer who even has an aunt who’s a real live sea captain!
