About this deal

And that’s the finished Necron Warrior! This was pretty fast and easy to do, and I’m very happy with the result. Despite using bright colors, they come across appropriately menacing, which is the goal. The Characters Let’s move to blue and green. The blues are your classic Ultramarines smurf blues, they cover all very well, even the light ones, but the triad is quite imbalanced, as Elysium Blue is too close to Celestial Blue in my opinion. The blue-grey triad is pretty nice though and has also a fantastic opacity, perfect for painting Space Wolves. The green triad is solid as well, with much better coverage than Citadel’s Warpstone Glow and Moot Green. The washes are mostly straightforward, but you will find that I love using contrasts on metals to give them a kind of saturation that they really benefit from, in this case I use snake bite on the gold and basilicanum on the steel. Otherwise the next weird choice I have is to use drakenhof to recess shade the green as it can read as darker and more itegrated then something like nuln oil due to fun colour theory stuff I only vaguely grasp in a intuitive way. I think the others should be pretty logical, parchment gets washed sepia, the cloaks with extremely thinned agrax, and finally the seals get painted in with shyish. Stipple Reikland Fleshshade on the bottom half of armor panels, and downward facing parts of arms, and along bottom of rib cage. (The stippling can be more of splotching and even slashes.) Hit The stippling can be more of splotching and even slashes the recesses with Reikland, then do an all over smooth wash when it dries, this is more as a filter than shade.

My bases on smaller models is typically fairly basic, just wash and drybrush over a texture paint before cleaning up the rims and throwing on tufts from Gamers’ Grass. The Loremasters of Hoeth theorise that warpstone was a substance first created by the pre-historic Old Ones to power their inexplicable arcane devices, like the Polar Gates. The Loremasters believe that when catastrophe overtook the Old Ones, this power source was ejected from its place between both the material and immaterial universes. [2a] Step 9: Wash the whole thing with Nuln Oil. Once that dries, drybrush it with Celestra Grey. Credit: Robert “TheChirurgeon” Jones The Nihilakh dynasty are visually notable for combining teal and gold/bronze coloring on their armor. Most notably, Trazyn originally hails from this dynasty, and the studio paint job for Orikan the diviner also follows this color scheme. Fabius Bile: Clonelord is the sequel to Primogenitor, and while it’s really a Fabius Bile story, it does feature Trazyn the Infinite in a major role, and details how he came into possession of one of his greatest prizes. The High Elves thus eschew the use of warpstone in favour of "power stones" of their own making, each of which instead draws only a single Wind of Magic to it and crystallizes that lesser force into physical form, without the horrifying effects that are the result of the solidification of true Warpstone. [2b] Mankind and Warpstone Chaos Daemons – The Chaos Daemons are a race of monstrous creatures that are associated with the forces of Chaos, and Warpstone Glow is a great color to use for their weapons and abilities to create a magical and otherworldly effect.

Some people prefer heavy Citadel Base-like paints that can be sloughed on in only a few coats. Others prefer thin, glaze-like paints that need to be applied in 100 layers. Two Thin Coats paints straddle this gap, committing to neither the ultra-heavy nor the extremely-light makeups you may find in other paints. Jab a deep orange (in this case VGC Hot Orange) within the Screamer Pink. This is a thin paint so I do 2 coats of differing diameter. I have a couple of ways of doing the flames, the first is the simple way where I start by sketching in the first few shapes in a coat of Mephiston then the rest of the colours are just progressively smaller rough ‘c’ shapes of evil suns, fire dragon, ungor, and pallid wych. Placing the little ‘c’ shapes in various directions gets the idea across enough while still keeping it down to a minute or two a model total, but for centerpieces or characters I’ll draw in the distinct flames carefully and add transitional mixes wherever I feel it is too stark. The Necrons are primarily viewed as antagonists in 40k fiction, and have very little personality in those early pieces of fiction owing to how they were positioned. There’s been more recently, but it’s still tough to find a book with Necrons where they get to be more than enemies. As Chaos is the true source of all eight Winds of Magic, warpstone is considered by Old World scholars as the ultimate physical manifestation of pure magic. When Chaos first entered the mortal world through the two polar gates of the Old Ones during the Great Catastrophe, most of its energy was divided into the eight Winds of Magic, flowing steadily southward and eventually towards the isles of Ulthuan where the excess magic was drained into the Great Vortex at the centre of the island-continent's Inner Sea.

Coat D'Arms match the OLD citadel colours (pre-1992) so there might be some difference. Shining gold has the most noticeable difference, It’s easier to get a solid edge highlight with the Citadel paint, whereas if I wanted the same level of opacity with the Two Thin Coats paints, I’d need to edge highlight everything (you guessed it) twice. And I don’t want to do that, because that’d take forever…and I’m an extremely lazy painter edge highlighting is hard. Step 8: The base! I slather it all in Astrogranite texture paint. I also paint the stone by the foot and the scarab with Leadbelcher.Once the drybrushing has dried, I make an almost glaze-like wash of Steel Legion Drab. This is applied across the surfaces of the blue, without letting it pool into the recesses. If anything you want thin areas of pooling on the surfaces as this will break up the big flat areas of blue later on without looking too blotchy, so long as you’ve thinned your paint enough. It might take a bit of practice but it’s worth getting right. Finally, I glaze the entire section with Lamenters Yellow (I bought up a big surplus but you could create a glaze using Iyanden Yellow Contrast and some Contrast Medium) which is thinned slightly. I’ve found that using straight from the pot can lead to some overly green sections, which isn’t what I’m looking for, so the thinning really helps to dilute some of that colour and turn it to the characteristic turquoise-esque colour. With only a touch of water, the Two Thin Coats paints go on very smoothly. Coverage is very good, but the first – and most glaring difference between the two paints – was that the Two Thin Coats paint was thinner than the Citadel paint. Not to the extent it was counterproductive to painting (funnily enough, I only had to apply two thin coats to get a good opaque colour), but just noticeably so. The gold is a simple basecoat of Retributor Armour shaded with Reikland Fleshshade for a nice, vibrant gold. I then drybrush the edges with Liberator Gold before being finished with a very light highlight of Stormhost Silver on the extreme edges.

These models have been great fun to work on thus far, and I’m looking forward to working on the Reanimator and Skorpekh Lord next. Salamanders units do not use the same battlefield role notation as other chapters, using flames to mark their battle and reserve companies on the right shoulder pad. Salamanders use gothic script to denote squad number. The red triad is pretty amazing with very high coverage and a lovely set of colours, Berserker Red and Sanguine Scarlet cover with two thin coats, Demon Red needs three, but it’s a super intense bright red, actually even more vibrant than Evil Sunz Scarlet. As expected, the yellow and orange paints need a few more coats to become fully opaque, but they are at least as richly pigmented as Citadel’s yellow and orange paints, if not better. Composition-wise, I think Yellow Flame should be a bit lighter, and the shadow paint Dark Sun Yellow is a more muted mustard yellow similar to Averland Sunset, so it doesn’t really fit the triad’s two other vibrant yellows. It’s the same with Orange Rust, which is also more desaturated than the other two oranges. For the yellow cables I started with a brown base coat to provide a really stark contrast against the highlighted sections, otherwise I find cables can look like they have not even been highlighted from a distance.

One_Wing’s Method

As a form of pure Dhar, warpstone is a valuable resource for necromancers and Vampires. It is said that Nagash himself consumed mainly Warpstone during his flight from Nehekhara and that it became infused into his very bones and melted his flesh away. [3a] Once the models are ready to be painted, the first step is to work out what’s getting a metallic treatment, and which parts of the model are “Canoptek stuff” and get the green stone treatment. Here there are distinct design differences to the last segment of the legs that fit the latter, so that’s where I decided to make the split. My recipe for energy weapons is also a modified version of the same.
