About this deal

There wasn't really a description of the places he has been - I think everything I could imagine was because I've seen some of the pictures of the events on TV. Steve along with three colleagues from Poplar Fire Station were among the first British Firefighters to fly to New York in the days following the attacks on the Twin Towers. I found it interesting learning about his background, about his thoughts and emotions in certain situations and his passion for the job shine through. As Dave opened the nozzle we were engulfed in steam as the water cooled the superheated atmosphere above us. After a few minutes, my curiosity satisfied, and before Joanne’s polite indulgence into my trip down memory was tested, we got on our way and now it can all be filed away under youthful enthusiasm and the invincibility that comes from being 24 years old.

While that completed the circle career-wise for Stephen, he’s since gone one step further, publishing London Firefighter, a book that aims to give readers a sense of the evolution of the London Fire Brigade during his more than three decades of service. I cannot recommend this book highly enough; if you have an interest in firefighting, in the London Fire Brigade or want to have a career in the job then read this book! It was also exciting, driving the fire engines, rushing to scenes, using specialist equipment and meeting the public. It changed me at school too – I started using that banter at school and the other kids probably thought I was a bit of a live wire. Our main character is the author of the book himself and it's finally a book where you can really see how mentally damaged a firefighter can be.A good mixture of anecdote and education - although I did find that during some of the more technical aspects (particularly discussing risk assessments etc) I began to glaze over a bit.

Being an ex LFB Firefighter this book is a great read so far (only half way through the book at time of writing) can relate to much of what is written and also recollect some of the incidents of which are mentioned. But the most despicable issue with this work is that the author chose to totally disregard the instruction of his employer to remain quiet about the Grenfell Tower fire and allow the victims and their families to have the tragedy properly examined at the public inquiry. Seeing dead bodies and going into a still burning tower is an important duty and it can traumatize you so much and you say he is only "crying"?
