About this deal

At Porthkerris School, they had been notorious for their devilment and wickedness, but since moving on to the County School in Penzance, had been somewhat tamed by a terrifying headmaster, and been forced to settle down to their books and mend their ways. He has an unerring moral compass – his schoolteacher past has never quite left him – and books such as War Horse and The Butterfly Lion have a strong social concience and an honesty that makes them universal. A ‘coming of age’ novel is just about my favourite type of book and I felt like I entered into the world of Judith Dunbar and the 1000 or so pages just seemed to turn themselves as I got totally absorbed into Judith’s world and that of her adopted Cornish family. Having finished the novel for the second time, I feel devastated that all the lovely people with whom I've lived for several days are now out of my life. Hardback, genuine cloth back and spine, printed in full colour throughout on 150gsm matt art paper, 136pp, 230mm x 165mm.

There are some books that I know so well, I can pick them up and just start anywhere, anytime, and be whisked away without moving a step. They emerged in small groups, jostling and giggling and uttering shrieks of cheerful abuse at each other, before finally dispersing and setting off for home. It was a fascinating topic, around which the two girls had skirted from time to time without ever coming to any useful conclusion, except the fact that Norah Elliot smelt and her school blouses were always dirty. Readers of Pilcher's are looking for a book written with class, a good narrative voice, and a happy ending. The Warrens were an intensely close family, and Heather could not imagine a worse fate than to be torn from her parents and her two older brothers, both as handsome and raven-haired as their father. At fourteen, Judith reckoned that she was mature enough to have really important decisions, that were going to affect her, shared and discussed. Judith’s hopes, disappointments, loves, losses, and her own contribution to the war effort are all meticulously portrayed through the sensitive and skillful writing of this accomplished author. Years later, Touré is an award-winning investigative journalist and Niomi is America's most popular morning-show host, but they both feel like something’s missing. She’s going to let you have her best spare room for your own, and you can take your own bits and pieces with you, and have them there.

Towards the 70% mark I really almost cried because this was such a beautiful story of soulmates finding their way back to each other. Two sisters, Edna and Hilda by name, who worked for her as cook and house parlourmaid, were equally elderly and unforthcoming, not a bit like darling Phyllis, who did everything for them all at Riverview House, but still found time to play racing demon at the kitchen table and read fortunes with tea-leaves. As soon as it ended (and let me tell you- it's an impeccable ending) I still wasn't ready to say goodbye to the characters. That day, the tide-race of the Channel was indigo-blue, but the ocean was turquoise, with rollers pouring in onto the empty beach.

Michael Morpurgo has thrilled and delighted huge numbers of young readers since becoming a children’s author in the early 1970s," Wood said.

I have read this book twice and that is not something I have done with many of the thousands of books I have read. One would have thought, that after so many books I would have been accustomed to such goodbyes and voids. You can also read about his life in War Child to War Horse, a collaborative biography with Maggie Fergusson. At 14, Judith is sent to boarding school in Cornwall when her mother and sister leave England to rejoin her father in Ceylon and then Singapore. She is introduced to a world of wealth and privilege by her classmate, Loveday Carey-Lewis, whose family owns the magnificent Cornwall estate known as Nancherrow. Drawing on the rich culture and landscape of her native County Derry, Cara offers a rare glimpse into her upbringing, her remarkable family, and the customs and stories that have helped shape her as an artist, and as a woman.

Then they had climbed the tower and stood at the top in the buffeting wind, and he had pointed out interesting landmarks to her. Neither parent told her that her mother was pregnant, and it was not until after the three-week voyage had been made and they were back in grey England, with the rain and the cold, that Judith was let into the secret that there was a new baby on the way.At Saint Ursula's, her friendship with Loveday Carey-Lewis sweeps her into the privileged, madcap world of the British aristocracy, teaching her about values, friendship, and wealth. I found it hard to relate to any of the characters on a personal level because they felt somehow distant, like I was hearing their story narrated by a random person who is only semi-interested in them.
