About this deal

In many ways Azula is the perfect representation of the phrase "Hurt people, hurt people," and after the truly horrifying things Azula has done in her past, it begs the question: can someone like Azula ever really find redemption or reconciliation with her family? This one feels so good because it's furthering a plot element we've been so intrigued by for years-- Azula's psyche and if she could ever be redeemed.

Hazy-Feel Turn: At the end of the story, Azula has rejected a chance at redemption but also is shown willing to let her henchwomen go without taking vengeance on them or forcing them back into servitude, insisting to herself she'll find some other place and people to rule. Written in consultation with Avatar Studios, the veteran team of Faith Erin Hicks, Peter Wartman and Adele Matera is back with a new story in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. She eventually loses the Fire Nation throne to her brother in the Comet-Enhanced Agni Kai fight, with the timely help of Katara.

One new reveal that was only hinted at in the show was the abandonment Azula felt when her mother left to live her own life outside the palace walls of the Fire Nation Capital. Rule of thumb is never actually tell the audience a character’s fundamental wants and fears, because where’s the fun in that. The group runs through the village to a granary, avoiding the attention of Fire Nation Domestic Forces guards. Peter Wartman and Adele Matera do their best to copy the look and feel of Avatar: The Last Airbender in terms of the general art and color style, and for the most part, they do a good job at it.

It then spells out how every awful and cruel action she committed was her own choice and how her refusal to take responsibility for those actions is why she is still the monster she resents being. Born in the wilds of British Columbia, the young Faith frolicked among the Sasquatch native to the province before moving to Ontario at age five. One of the things fans love most about Azula is the fact that she is just so good at being a villain, representing a truly terrifying look at the power of obsession, familial pressure, and jealousy. It was originally planned to be released on September 26, 2023, but it was later delayed multiple times to an official release of October 31, 2023. Chiyou is sitting on the ground, restrained and surrounded, and looking at her comrades in disbelief. This is a thin little book so it’s hard for it make a major impression, but it’s a worthwhile journey spent in the tortured head of many’s favorite Avatar villain. When the air settles, Azula finds herself in the middle of a forest, her cloak hanging from a branch. but it's smaller now, suggesting that while still a monster, Azula is now much less of one than she was before going through this.

She grabs onto the wooden beam and hangs upside down from the ceiling, her eyes glowing red and parts of her hairstyle morphing into spider chelicerae. Azula is one of my fave characters in the Avatar universe and this story felt like it didn't do her justice, extend her character arc or delve into her real trauma without somehow blaming her. The artwork is great and I loved seeing how Azula sees her father, Fire Lord Ozai versus how Zuko sees him. It's especially notable since during the Agni Kai where he actually got his scar Azula had a front-row seat and was enjoying it.This incredible tale of survival and bravery in the face of overwhelming evil happened to a literal child.

She has done horrific things to her brother and nation, and it will be fascinating to see whether she is able to choose to atone for her sins and attempt redemption. There she was homeschooled with her three brothers, and developed an unnatural passion for galloping around on horseback, though never without a proper helmet (because you only get one skull). The small version of it has a three part body plan like an insect rather than the snakelike body it had in it's larger form. While I loved the concept of Azula confronting her demons, and slowly becoming aware of the “monster” she’s become, this feels incomplete.
