Well, I looked at Mum and told her my film had gone too and she asked Teddy if his thing was still working, but it wasn’t.

The Day the Screens Went Blank - Audible UK

What happens when Mum and Dad can no longer rely on technology to keep them informed? Following a nationwide collapse in everything technical, Stella’s family sets off to visit Grandma on the other side of the country because they can’t reach her on Skype. It’s a road trip with a difference – no phones, no sat nav, no paying for a meal with a credit card. Stella makes a great narrator as she watches her father, shorn of his usual helping tools, navigate this new situation. In doing so she lightly reveals the pitfalls that would beset us all if all the screens went blank while also gently leading readers to see that there could be some benefits.Sunday night is always film night: Mum and Dad watching on the TV, Stella on her phone and little brother Teddy on his tablet. That is, until one terrible evening when all the screens go blank! I’ll usually choose something exciting but age-appropriate and on Sunday it was Dumbo, which I was greatly enjoying, though I have to say it was a little far-fetched. The Day the Screens Went Blank is a laugh out loud adventure about the world changing overnight that is utterly fitting for our current times.

Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! Part of the Solve Your Own Mystery seri... Stella is going to visit her Grandma but this isn’t any ordinary holiday, it’s an adventure into the unknown. After all her parents can’t do anything without technology, they don’t actually realise how much they depend on it. How will Stella and her brother cope in the car without a gadget to distract them? That’s not normal behaviour, but then it’s not really normal for every screen to stop working and go blank now, is it? When 10year old Stella (obsessed with organisation) finds a world of blank screens, she finds it “fun” but when they remember Grandma on the other side of the country 8 hours away! With no skipe to call with, they immediately go to there dads office and gets a frined to right out the roads for them. This trip took way longer than expected…. Ended up with a hideously dirty car, a strange man who dad kept saying was “Unlcle Tony” and many more surprises! What happens to Stella's family feels like the comedy version of an older reader's dystopia, though to many it would of course feel just as frightening and world-ending: screens die. Humanity is left bereft and suffering withdrawal, floundering around both in families and communities and as whole societies to function. Would very much reccomend to anybody, may be harder to read for 5-6year olds, but the audio book is fab too. Thanks so much for reading x

A little proselytising aside, I found this very funny. Loved seeing what adventures and scrapes the family found themselves in on their trip to Grandma's House through the 'woods'. Lots of heavy-handed messages, but also a rather sweet one at the end. It's a pretty short novel, and I'm certain will fascinate children simply with the idea of losing all their technology. Great opportunity for one of those 'in my day' conversations with parents and teachers! It was a really funny book. It was about a girl called Stella and a boy called Teddy and they went on a car journey to there grandma's house.
