About this deal

The picture of grandmother, the pathetic story her teacher, her husband, Nayana Murthy's initial trials and financial stringency to come up in life, her variegated experiences in her classroom and the rest of her stories - 35 in all - make us wonder at the tender human being amalgamating all the diverse experiences in all the stories she harks back to past and takes us aloft with her. When Sudha Murthy comes back, she tells her about her despair and expresses her strong desire to learn and read on her own. The first title in the anthology, How I Taught My Grandmother to Read has been included in the CBSE Class 9 English syllabus. In the pages of these books, she recounts her meetings with some famous and some not so famous people, who taught her great valuable lessons.

Sudha Murthy s How I Taught My Grandmother To Read And Other Stories has been translated into 15 languages. One of the simple pleasures of the author s grandmother was listening to her granddaughter narrate the story of Kashi Yatre, a lady who sacrificed her life s savings to help out the needy, appearing in the weekly magazine Karmaveera. As a bright woman from a simple middle class family with a liberal upbringing, Sudha Murthy reminds one of a school teacher and her stories have an instructive tone to them. It was a heartwarming anecdote that beautifully portrayed the love between a grand-daughter and her grand-mother. This and various such profound experiences form the basis of How I Taught My Grandmother To Read And Other Stories.

While I wouldn't recommend them to someone who prefers more polished writing, I certainly can't deny that her voice strikes a chord inside my own middle class, ambitious self. Her books have been translated into all the major Indian languages and have sold over three lakh copies around the country. This was my first book by the author and I highly recommend it to people who want to start reading her.

If the author had cut down on the self glorification and the self appraisal on every second page, this book. One may safely conclude that this rich harvest of stories, How I Taught My Grandmother and Other Stories is marked by fidelity to truth and beauty. The book is simple and easy to read with no complications , The book is themed around various morals suitable for children and youngsters , that does not mean the book is not meant for grown ups , Its refreshing to go through the stories especially when you have hard time and you dont wanna have faith in humanity and society , The book kindles the optimism in you and reminds of altruism , inspiring others and things that matters to one most than money. The reader can learn loads from this simple living, high thinking teacher who has spent most of her life doing charitable work. In ‘A lesson in Ingratitude’, what she conveyed was a fair point, but I completely disagree with the way that point was put across.
