While most bottles offer various teat levels that are tied to an age range (for example, 3 months+), every infant has their own feeding style, which is not necessarily a reflection of their age or size. So if you’re noticing a sudden change in your baby’s behaviour then you should cycle through the usual possibilities – growth spurt, developmental leap, sleep regression, teething– and add bottle flow rate to the list! As a baby’s feeding develops and they are taking a longer time feeding from a Level 1 teat, many parents choose to move up to a Level 2 teat.
After this experience, I decided after reading online that many babies don’t need to increase the teat size that he must be ones of those babies, but then, not long later, Dexter started displaying a few key signs that he was indeed ready to move up to a faster flowing teat.

If you’re considering changing the flow of teats before your baby shows signs of being ready, there’s no harm in giving it a go.
It’s best to replace teats at regular intervals – at least every two to three months – as washing and sterilising will wear on the material.

Dexter was around six months old when I changed the teats in his bottle from size 2 to size 3. I had previously attempted to change him to the bigger teats around a month before, but had failed spectacularly. Milk had spilled everywhere, he had choked, gagged, spat out the milk and finally started clamping his mouth shut.
