About this deal

Even Patience herself, despite her obvious struggles as a single mother with few job prospects, is never as sympathetic as she should be. Kick-Ass has always been a book that pushed the envelop of what a comic book can do and I am expecting no less from this story. It's one of the earliest movies I remember seeing an absurd amount of times in theaters, as well as the very first movie I ever saw at SXSW, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Though the comic can't be the same as the movie, which I loved watching, it was missing a key piece. As long as you have a balanced diet, there's no harm in occasionally snacking on something that might not be good for you, but is tasty whilst it lasts - and Kick-Ass serves that purpose perfectly well. That being said, Patience is a compelling character, and Romita and Steigerwald bring their A-game to the art. But with no special powers and outmatched by New York City's most hardened criminals, Kick-Ass might be in for a little more than he bargained for. follows the theme of realism in his pencils, filling the action panels with blood, bruises, and very grounded fighting.Don’t fool yourselves: the angular and blocky style remain, but it is far more subdued that what he delivered elsewhere (for a quick reference, take a look at DC´s recent “The Silencer”). The girls toy aisles aren't our regular ball park but we occasionally like to try something different to our norm. Millar’s best scripts have always juggled that balance, following pages of characters development and motivation with the ultimate, violent realization of those drivers. The script loses little time in over-explaining why Patience chose to dress like Kick-Ass in particular: it simply assumes that that iconography is part of her world’s zeitgeist, aligned with past volumes of the series.

Here, Romita captures that into his art and keeps the flow going even on such vastly different story beats. The new Kick-Ass abandons nerdy high schooler Dave Lizewski in favor of Patience Lee, a recently discharged military veteran struggling to support her family. Relive what happens when Dave Lizewski asks himself "How come nobody's ever become a superhero before?Issue one kickstarts this brand new series with a bang and really sets itself apart from the David Lizewski tales, Patience is a breath of fresh air and genuinely kicks ass! It doesn't help that this issue spends so little time exploring her transition from soldier to vigilante, making it feel like a very abrupt and implausible development in her life. The storytelling is strong and you'll want to learn more about Patience and her plight at the end of this issue.
