At age 16, Joan left home, and led by voices and visions from the saints, traveled to join the Dauphin. In 1429, she convinced the French heir to give her an army, which she took to relieve French forces besieged by the English at Orleans. Endowed with remarkable mental and physical courage, Joan led her men in a whirlwind campaign that lifted the siege in 9 days, and sent the English fleeing. In so doing, she won a momentous victory that repulsed an English attempt to conquer France. In today’s time, Muslim women are depicted as oppressed by the men in their community. It is also wrongly portrayed thatwomen in Islam have little or no rightsor liberty. Little do they know about the story of Khawlah bint al-Azwar (ra),who is the perfect reply to those people who think that being a Muslim woman is just equal to being oppressed. I have heard a story of a female companion who was a warrior and was compared to Khalid Bin Waleed (Allah be pleased with him). As far as I have heard, she partook in many battles and fought against disbelievers. However, when I looked into it, I came to know that her story comes through Al-Waqidi, a well-known liar, as mentioned by many scholars, so I wanted to ask if her story comes from another route or if it’s authentic. The first version narrated the siege of Bahnasa were led by Khalid ibn al-Walid, who also brought an ex Sassanid Marzban and his 2,000 Persian convert soldiers in this campaign. The Persian Marzban suggested to Khalid to form a suicide squad who will carry a wooden box filled with mixture of sulphur and oil and placing it at the gates, ignited it and blasting the gates(or melting the iron gate, according to the original translation), allowing the Muslim army to enter the city. [51] [52]During the siege of al-Rastan, it is recorded that the supreme commander of Rashidun, Abu Ubaydah, employing certai plan that allowed Dhiraar and about 20 warriors which included Al-Musayyab bin Najba, Dhul-Kalaa Al-Himyari, Amr bin Ma;di Yakrib Al-Zubaidi, Hashim ibn Utba, Qays ibn Makshuh, Abd Al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq, Malik bin Al-Ashtar, and others to enter the city, and causing riot inside which thrown the entire city to confusion, and opening the gate from inside to allow the Muslim forces waiting outside to overwhelm the defense, [31] thus allowing the city to be captured despite it has very strong fortification defense. Retrieved 22 December 2021.Speaking about Khawla Bint Al Azwar Military School as the Gulf region’s first military college for women, Al Falasi said: “Since 1991, women have also played a role in the defence of the nation, when the Khawla Bint al Azwar Military School was founded in line with the directives of the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan to prepare young women for careers in the military.” She first gained note as a warrior in 634, during the Arab siege of Damascus, when her brother was wounded and taken prisoner by the city’s Byzantine defenders. Khawla donned armor and arms, and covering her face with a shawl to hide her gender, charged the Byzantine rearguard alone. She fought until reinforcements arrived to rescue her brother from captivity. The Roman leader was enraged by what happened and directed a detachment of his knights against the women, though he first tried to tempt them with many promises. He told Khawla that he planned to marry her and make her the first lady of Damascus. But she replied scornfully: “I wouldn’t even accept you as the shepherd of my camels! How do you expect me to degrade and live with you? I swear it will be me who cuts your head off because of your insolence.” Taymiyyah, Ibn. Islamic Books by Ibn Taymiyyah Maqdisi and Abdullah Azzam.
