About this deal

A lip tie is an extra piece of skin that goes from the upper gum to behind the upper lip, usually in the middle of the lip. It means food banks are, instead, finding a way around the rules - donating nappies and wet wipes to reduce overall costs, or even handing out the money for mothers to go and buy the formula themselves. Breast milk is amazing, so having lots is a good thing, right? Well, not always... Some babies struggle with the fast flow that usually accompanies an overabundant milk supply. And mums with oversupply can often feel very uncomfortable, with frequently or constantly leaking breasts, and may be more likely to suffer from recurrent mastitis. In the beginning, it can feel like you're doing nothing but feeding. But gradually you and your baby will get into a pattern and the amount of milk you produce will settle down.

We have published legislation to restrict formula being given out free to families, except in emergency situations, given there’s a variety of different products on the market which may not be appropriate for certain babies – for example, due to their age. It's fine to feed your baby whenever they are hungry, when your breasts feel full or if you just want to have a cuddle. Any amount of breast milk has a positive effect. The longer you breastfeed, the longer the protection lasts and the greater the benefits. We're not allowed to hand baby milk out, which is very frustrating for us because we've got so many mothers that are struggling," Monique Collins from Disc food bank in Newquay told ITV News. Unicef also points to food banks being unable to "guarantee timely or consistent supplies of infant formula."

If you have any questions or concerns about food allergies, you can talk to your GP, midwife or health visitor. Or it could be more often in the day, and one longer stretch of 4-5 hours overnight, meaning you only needs to get up once in the night to express. This could be at the same time baby wakes to feed, or it could mean setting an alarm if your baby is in hospital. Low level drinking during breastfeeding is not linked with shorter breastfeeding duration or adverse outcomes in infants up to 12 months of age. (Wilson et al, 2017 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/dar.12473 ) If you'd like to eat peanuts or foods containing peanuts, such as peanut butter, while breastfeeding, you can do so as part of a healthy, balanced diet (unless, of course, you're allergic to them). Parents unable to afford baby formula are being left in a "dangerous" situation as a result of rules that don't allow food banks to dispense it.If possible, avoid using a dummy until you and your baby are happy with breastfeeding (usually after your baby is at least 1 month old). Gillian Lund aims to make a full response to you within the next 20 working days. During that time an investigation will seek to find out what has happened and whether there is any action that can be taken to put things right. Make some of the days of the week alcohol free and don’t drink more than two units on the other days. Feed your baby as often as they want and for as long as they want. They'll begin to have fewer, but longer feeds after a few days.

The children's charity warns that food bank staff and volunteers cannot support families "to feed their babies as safely as possible" in the same way trained professionals like health visitors and midwives can do. Currently there is no published evidence supporting a link between breastfeeding issues and lip tie.

Caffeine and breastfeeding

It's important to breastfeed at night because this is when you produce more hormones (prolactin) to build up your milk supply. Studies have shown that a mum’s alcohol consumption while breastfeeding might negatively affect their child’s sleep. A small study of 12 babies found babies exposed to alcohol though breastmilk might sleep for shorter periods but more often during a day, although their total amount of sleep in the three hours after consuming milk including alcohol was not significantly different to days when the mum didn’t drink (Mennella and Beauchamp, 1991). it may help if someone else gives the first bottle feeds, so that your baby is not near you and smelling your breast milk We know times are really tough for many new parents and passionately believe they should be able to swiftly access the care and support they need for themselves and their babies, when they need it. Breast storage capacity varies from woman to woman. Breasts are not storage devices, they are designed to continuously produce milk, and for this milk to be regularly removed.
