About this deal

My only complaint is that Byatt’s descriptions are far too rich, too colourful, so that she can belabour her ideas too heavily at times. Its not hard to empathize with Alabaster’s reluctance to relinquish the divine sublime of human art and esthetics. Also the role of Edgar, representing the boorish son who clings to the old ways of class hierarchy is finely wrought. The second novella of Angels and Insects, “The Conjugial Angel”, is focused on a group performing seances to communicate with the world beyond. What appears to be William’s unstable psyche is used more effectively for social critique, suggesting that human beings may not be nearly so respectable as our insectoid brethren.

This is the first film I can remember in which anyone is attacked by moths; Adamson expresses himself in cautious evasions and toadying compliments, like an intellectual Uriah Heep; and when the plot's trap finally springs and a secret is discovered, the movie makes a point of not explaining exactly how this is accomplished. While any overt connections between angels and insects might seem tentative or suspicious, they are herein linked on sonic as well as philosophical levels. I’ll show her how she can echo those promises someday for herself, if she chooses, at her Confirmation. Meanwhile, his wife is breeding and breeding -- one of several reasons Adamson feels it wouldn't be right for him to set off just yet. Instead, William marries Eugenia quite successfully, and they produce many children of their own over the course of the story.

Adding to the 'minor' theme of the unseen woman of the first novella, a 'minor' theme here is resistance to the Victorian age's angel-in-the-house mentality, a resistance that perhaps leads to Emily's willful eccentricity, perhaps also to a bit of The Yellow Wallpaper but at least not to The Madwoman in the Attic. In that way, it is much like an ant colony, the study of which forms the focal point of the story and becomes the way out for young William and for Matty as well. Mourning, death, longing for answers: this and more is creatively addressed here, but it's an odd mix of modern and Victorianism.

Her easy ventriloquism mocks Victorian excesses even as she uses these same elements to inveigle her readers. For the powerful figures of both places are served by countless servants, darting through dark corridors. I will with God’s help,” I tell her, and we go on together, choosing each day, each hour, each minute, the people we will be.
