About this deal

The new 4K remaster was done with supervision by LAIKA Studios, as I’ve mentioned before, and that adds a lot.

Inside Laika – Revisiting The Puppets With Laika’s Animation Team is broken down into separate sections for The Beldam, Mr. These are just a series of quick pieces that give us a close up look at each puppet as they appear in the finished movie and how they appear in real life. Mushrooming to a towering height, the fully agitated, sharp-boned wicked mom suggests an undead starlet. Factory is great; the native 4K image is sumptuous in its detailing, colouring, and black and white level, giving rise to a stunning picture; while the Dolby Atmos surround track makes full use of the 3D sound environment for a spellbinding aural experience. The new 2160p UHD image is dazzling and the new Dolby Atmos audio track is completely immersive and wonderful.

After she comes home the first day she’s moved in her mother gives her a package wrapped up that her new friend Wybie has left for her. I’ve been denying myself these imports of the Laika collection (Coraline, Paranorman, Boxtrolls and Kubo), trying to convince myself they’re not worth paying an extortionate amount due to the added tax but, now you’re tempting me. Bass is a little restrained, in that it is not heavy or bombastic, but it is no slouch either, underpinning everything well, rather than being overpowering. In terms of the reception from the critics upon its original 2009 release, Coraline was extremely well-rated.

Never have the textures of things looked so lifelike and the HDR only helps to make it all the better. Starting off with plenty of whimsy and choral singing yet retaining an element of menace and gradually becoming more and more sinister as the movie progresses to its ultimate showdown. The film is based on the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman, and, typical of his writing, is full of wonder and danger, with an unerring sense of the sinister that excites children so much.

The role fell to Dakota Fanning, just fourteen at the time of recording her lines, but already an accomplished actress with spectacular turns in Man on Fire (2004) and War of the Worlds (2005) to name but two. The film doesn’t have an animation style that will blow you out of the water in terms of razor sharp details, but the new 4K UHD disc looks really revealing and maximizes what you can see out of the textures and stop motion devices.

Fanning imbues the character with plenty of personality: providing Coraline with a clear sense of character. Combining that with the distinctive look given to the puppet and you have a very endearing character. But on the other side of a suddenly permeable bricked-up doorway and a pulsing blue umbilical tunnel, the folks’ doppelgangers reign: a permissive Other Mother whips up massive dinners of sweet breakfast food, her spouse rides a giant centipede and uses magical snapdragons to tend to a psychedelic garden, and the nutty neighbors stage spectacular aerial acts and an elaborate mice circus (shades of Busby Berkeley). fascinating sit for die-hard fans of the movie, who get a chance to see how certain visual ideas were developed in the final animation. Naturally the character of Coraline takes centre stage and has to appeal to the cinema going audience, therefore the voice acting talent chosen had to imbue her with that confident attitude, yet still remain tender and identifiable. We wind up with a story not at all unlike Alice In Wonderland, a fairly simple fairy tale-esque narrative that imaginative kids or grownups alike should have no problem relating to. The black level is perfectly solid here, like ink, despite being a type of animation that doesn’t use ink.
