About this deal

Ninny says she was an orphan raised by the Threadgoodes, and that she eventually married one of their sons. She principally talks about the youngest daughter, Imogene "Idgie" Threadgoode, an unrepentant tomboy who became reclusive after her brother, Buddy, was killed on the railway. I have to say, I don't know if I liked Buddy. You read the book and you see how his life turned out, but it seemed really weird how we find out he grew apart from those who knew and loved him. I just thought that part didn't ring real true. Plus the book kept jumping around and I never got a sense of him. I think he was supposed to be this book's Ninny, and he really wasn't. There are two magical parts with the "bee charmer" and the ripped out section from the Book of Ruth (which is mailed) “…whither thou goest, I will go….”

I expected this to be more about Bud, but it seemed that it was about everybody, even though it did tell readers about what happened to Bud through the years after he left Whistle Stop. This is the sort of book I enjoy when my brain decides to take a day off. But it is lovely and it is likely that even the most po-faced cynics (me) will be drawn into the warm doughy bosom of this story of love, friendship and adversity in 1930s Alabama. The history of Whistlestop, along with helpful recipe appendices allowing the transposition British readers from the grim north to the Deep South, is relayed to the beleaguered Evelyn by old Mrs Threadgoode.Once golden brown remove from the oil and place on a paper towel lined plate and continue to fry in batches until all the tomatoes are fried. The novel provided the source material for a feature film released as Fried Green Tomatoes in 1991. Adapted by Fannie Flagg and Carol Sobieski and directed by Jon Avnet, I recall that the film downplayed the romance between Idgie and Ruth but was entertaining and had some outstanding performances in it: Mary Stuart Masterson as Idgie, Mary-Louise Parker as Ruth, Jessica Tandy as Ninny and Kathy Bates as Evelyn. Bates is a standout. No two characters she played in the 1990s were alike. I had forgotten she was Molly Brown in Titanic and Adam Sandler's mom in The Waterboy too. I mean, Kathy Bates could do anything.Reading this book is like settling down with an old friend. Yes, it rambles as conversations between old friends who have known each other a long time are prone to do. Catching up with the characters from Whistle Stop and the new characters that are introduced is a delight. The main focus is Bud Threadgood and his daughter Ruthie, and the people that come into their lives or have connections to Whistle Stop Fannie Flagg always manages to write such heartwarming stories and this newest work from her is no exception. I found this to be a hybrid of short stories, a novel and a sentimental walk down memory lane featuring all the special characters from Whistle Stop.

I think that's why I am so sad right now. It's really hard to hit lightning in a bottle when you follow up on what should have been a stand alone book, but this one really showed how wonderful the first book was and how this one was not up to snuff at all. The writing was pretty scattered I thought. I think if we had followed things in a linear fashion it may have worked better. But going from the 1930s, to 1980, to 1990, to 2000 whatever was a lot. You also have to pay close attention so you can see when people you have followed from the first book have died and passed away. I just felt so annoyed by the whole thing after a while. Fannie Flagg was born Patricia Neal in Birmingham, Alabama in 1944 and grew up in the nearby railroad town of Irondale. She changed her name to Frances Carlton Flagg at age 17 when she applied for the Actor's Equity (there was already a Patricia Neal doing well in theater and film). She currently resides in Montecito, California Nichols, Peter M. (July 16, 1992). "Home Video". The New York Times. p.Section C, 24 . Retrieved September 20, 2020.A human being is a going-across? What, like a bridge? Now that makes me scribble another note: “Richard Bach: The bridge across forever.” Flagg is a feminist, and her work reflects her subtle but unmistakable passion for social justice. Again, with the first half of this book I feared she had lost her edge; once more, I see in the second half that I am mistaken. She was just warming up. Unlike so many of the novels I’ve read recently, this story gets better and better as it progresses. At 45%, it seems like a pleasant, harmless story, and a bit of a disappointment. At 56%, I’m sitting up straighter and noticing things. At 75% I’m laughing out loud. And from there to the finish, I don’t want it to end. Press START then TEMP and set at 400 degrees F. Next, set the TIME for 12 minutes. Open the air fryer halfway through and flip the tomatoes and spray again.

Most of Ninny's stories revolve around her sister-in-law Idgie Threadgoode, who like a wild animal, won't let people close, vanishing into the woods when life gets too much, or as an adult, down to the River Club and Fishing Camp to drink everyone under a table. Idgie is a teenager when she falls in love with a graduate of the Baptist Seminary named Ruth Jamison who comes to live with the Threadgoodes while supervising the BYO activities of the church for the summer. Sweet to the bone and beautiful, boys suddenly start attending Sunday service. Idgie drags Ruth out of bed one morning to share her secret ability to safely procure a jar of honey from a tree swarming with bees. But sadly, as the railroad yards shut down and the town became a ghost town, nothing was left but boarded-up buildings and memories of a happier time. One word of caution though, this story isn’t all ‘Beer and Skittles’, there are certainly elements of racism, violence and domestic violence that come through – making this story all the more realistic. In a sense, this was Bud recalling fond memories along with the written commentary of the newsletter put out by the local postmistress. There are so many characters and time periods here, all jumbled up and interspersed with small-town newspaper articles. Evelyn is going through menopause and just realizing that despite doing everything she was supposed to do to be a "good girl," life hasn't turned out the way she wanted it. She's just found her anger, and now she wants to burn the world down. Ninny is in a care home and is regaling Evelyn with those stories of the Whistle-Stop Cafe. Evelyn finds comfort in her company.Staff, Wide Open Country (2021-10-21). "Reba McEntire Says 'Fried Green Tomatoes' TV Series Isn't Happening: 'It Just Kind of Went Away' ". Wide Open Country . Retrieved 2023-02-14. Stops are made along the way, and you see the town’s demise as the years pass, as people pass. Through Dot’s newsletters you find out that Idgie Threadgoode closed down the Whistle Stop Café in the mid-60’s, and ‘retires’ to Florida near her brother Julian, Buddy marries, becomes a veterinarian, becomes a father, and then and eventually a grandfather. Meanwhile, Whistle Stop slowly becomes a town forgotten by the world, but remembered by the few who lived, and loved, their lives there. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg is a book I arrived at knowing little about, written by an author I know nothing about. So, it was a major surprise when I was blown out of the water by this experience.
