Swapping to either 6K30 or the high-quality 4K30 mode ups picture quality noticeably, but makes a couple of trade-offs. I would though, as is usually the case, steer clear of the extended settings; ISO 25,600 might be OK when there’s no alternative, but ISO 51,200 doesn’t look good at all, with little fine detail and heavily crushed blacks.

This can be particularly handy when you’re shooting in high-contrast situations, and I’d consider assigning it to a function button (I use the View Mode button) on the viewfinder housing.

This lets creators pick between something with a rangefinder-style body like the X-E4 and X-Pro3, or a centered viewfinder like the X-T and X-H lines. If you need the resolution, and have the right support equipment and scene, multi-shot delivers its promise of excessive resolution. It is literally impossible to please everyone, although Sony’s taking a shot with the A7R V which appears to offer the best of both approaches, albeit lacking the physical solidity of one approach or the other. At first glance the X-T5 body looks a lot like the X-T4, with an almost identical control layout from the front, top and rear, but place them side by side and you’ll notice the 5 is a little shorter and narrower, albeit still not quite as slim as the older X-T3.

A three-way tilting LCD offers enhanced versatility, particularly when working at waist level or in portrait orientation. So far though, it feels like the Fujifilm X-T5 is a welcome evolution of the X-T series, rather than a revolution. With weatherproof bodies, lightweight frames and particular emphasis on analogue control dials, they are just fantastic cameras to use. Note how the system found another face in the background as I temporarily left the frame, proving someone’s carving skills were more human than others – not me I should add!

However, the X-H2 would still be a better choice for those who’ll be shooting regularly with large telephoto lenses.
