In late 2009, Ilegal Mezcal became legal and today is available in the USA, Australia, Europe and the Caribbean. Ilegal Mezcal is an artisanal mezcal made in Oaxaca in Mexico, employing very traditional methods including the use of the a stone Tahona to crush the agave, which has been cooked in an earthen pit, giving it a strong smokiness.Oak notes of vanilla and nutmeg entwined with raosted agave aromas of bell pepper, leather and smoke. The company had a very successful marketing campaign around the phrase “Donald eres un Pendejo” in 2016 for the US election. On the palate, the aromas turn into strong tastes – a vanilla sweetness blends nicely with the citrus, a hint of spice, and an earthy flavour.

Handcrafted in small batches by fourth-generation mezcaleros, our Joven, Reposado, and Añejo mezcals are all made with perfectly ripe, sustainable Espadín agave, double distilled in the Santiago Matatlan Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico. As the flavour builds you’ll enjoy notes of citrus and smooth honey, leading to a sweet and short aftertaste of honeyed vanilla and citrus zest. Crafted from Espadin agave, Reposado is “rested” for up to four months in ex bourbon barrels before bottling. More fitting of a Soderbergh film, Ilegal's history is full of bandits, river rafts, bribes and disguises.

On the nose, there are flavours of caramelised pear and bitter orange, with notes of clove, butterscotch, and hints of vanilla on the palate. Ilegal Anejo spends time in both French and American oak casks, delivering a unique flavour profile which you’ll definitely enjoy.
