Hard snapbacks and surf slides put a lot of pressure on the skateboard surf adapter, particularly with a heavier rider. So many surfskate and pump tutorials show the rear foot over or even slightly behind the rear wheels. To recap, the Waterborne surf adapter is a capable mechanical piece that effectively turns any skateboard or longboard into a sharp-turning surf skate. I am riding with my rear foot turned forward slightly and my rear foot heel a bit over the the rear drop hump.
The main difference between them is that Waterborne uses a urethane bushing while Yow has a mechanical spring. It feels like there are cushions under both feet, lending the board to confidently turn tightly even on rough concrete. The Surf Adapter and Rail Adapter have been very well engineered and are guaranteed for the life fo the product. Both adapters use soft traditional urethane bushings at their core, instead of metal springs like other surf trucks, for bringing back the turning arm toward the center. I set it up as they did initially in the Stoke video with the dual king pins (DKPs), and my oh my…the board is soooo smooth.I had been concerned that I might not like giving up the 2 inches (34"-32") in length from my previous board, but I quickly realized that I liked the shorter deck even more because I feel like I have more control of it. Although more stable at speed, some riders find the Waterborne looser than the Swelltech, which is great if your goal is surf training. It’s certainly an acquired writing taste if you will, but you can master riding it within the first week and after that it’s just an absolute blast.
