About this deal

Telling the stories of three girls, Jane, Emily and Grace, from their childhoods into adulthood, Tillman convincingly captures the lives of these girls in a way that feels so contemporary to novels today.

Tillman charts the girls’ unsteady drift into womanhood, revealing the multiple forms of inheritance– family, gender, culture – that a girl must swallow or rebel against. I think she was just as good, if more overt, in portraying the tribulations that paint/taint the various stages of womanhood.Overall, if you want to feel some type of raw emotion and the struggles they've faced such as self-love, betrayal, relationships, and just teenage acceptance and finding where they stand in life, then I recommend. And, being so stringent, it loses some of the local colour that could have distinguished (say) Emily from Jane. I’m not sure if I can say anything more than what has already been said about why it’s such a darn good book. Composer and author] Paul Bowles read Haunted Houses and we had a conversation through the mail – he always wrote on onionskin because it cost less to mail it from Morocco – and he said he liked the novel but he got the characters confused like Dostoyevsky [laughs]. I think, I think, I am thinking that Tillman successfully rescued the young girl from the trope even before there was a trope.

beautiful prose and i can recognise how important this novel with 3 young, flawed female protagonists must have been for american literature, being published in the 80s. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. I found a great comfort in their absurdity’s, traumas and behaviours, the stories of average women are so valuable and I am so excited to read more from Lynne Tillman. When the author released her work in the 80s and 90s apparently it wasn’t very popular, this was because (especially in Haunted Houses) her novel follows mundane women, they aren’t especially powerful or groundbreaking, they are just young women in America discovering their place in their world, and people didn’t care about these kind of women at the time. But to go back to the first thing you asked, how does it feel to see Haunted Houses out again, it feels good.
