About this deal

Rembrandt’s Danaë , 1636 Danaë by Rembrandt van Rijn, 1636, via The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia In this painting, Manet depicts a naked woman, accompanied by two men, wearing modern clothing. She is a modern Parisian woman and not a divine Venus born nude naturally from the sea. It was considered vulgar for an everyday woman to be seen naked, showing that she could be dressed, but she decided not to. She seems naked and not born nude, taking into consideration her discarded clothing in the foreground. She looks directly at the viewer with her hand on her chin. Her body is minimally shaded, making her appear flat on the canvas.

When it comes to the advent of the smartphone-facilitated nude selfie, meanwhile, the question is: how have we absorbed this language and grammar of nakedness? It's something that artists are certainly exploring, recreating the camera angles, the up-close poses and pouts, the partially-pulled-down underwear on gallery walls. In this work, Vesalius also becomes the first person to describe mechanical ventilation. [26] It is largely this achievement that has resulted in Vesalius being incorporated into the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists college arms and crest. All these naked self-portraits were painted within the first decade of the 20th Century – and rather set the tone for the rest of it. Such paintings were possible, writes Borzello in The Naked Nude, because these artists had "no-one to answer to but themselves… These naked portraits follow no tradition. They are new. They make the private public. And they left a legacy." Deborah, Parker, Bronzino: Renaissance Painter as Poet (Cambridge and New York: Cambridge University Press, 2000). In modern media, images of partial and full nudity are used in advertising to draw attention. In the case of attractive models this attention is due to the visual pleasure the images provide; in other cases it is due to the relative rarity of such images. The use of nudity in advertising tends to be carefully controlled to avoid the impression that a company whose product is being advertised is indecent or unrefined. There are also (self-imposed) limits on what advertising media such as magazines will allow. The success of sexually provocative advertising is claimed in the truism "sex sells." However, responses to nudity in American advertisements have been more mixed; nudity in the advertisements of Calvin Klein, Benetton, and Abercrombie & Fitch, for example, has provoked negative as well as positive responses.

But does the nude selfie, in its purest state, have the potential to be a new art form? Ingles thinks so. "Absolutely, I think that it can be an art form," she says. "It's nice to see that thought and reflection, not just snapping a photo – people taking time to do the lighting, your hair and make-up. It shows the person respects themselves." Calogero, R. M. His artistic photography of male nudes has been exhibited in art shows in Seattle, Detroit, Dallas, Rochester, N.Y., and Manchester, Conn., and has been published in the United Kingdom and the United States.Cf. Richard Brereton, Sketchbooks: The Hidden Art of Designers, Illustrators & Creatives, Laurence King, repr. ed. 2012. Combining my passion for photography and admiration of the fine male form, I attempt to capture, in the most artistic way, all that the body has to offer -- the beautiful and the mundane, the graceful and the dirty, the spiritual and the profane." In Rembrandt’s painting, Danäe is depicted very naturally, lying on the bed naked. She becomes aware of the divine presence, which takes the form of a warm golden Eros . Rembrandt rendered the scene as naturally as possible, to draw attention to the leading figure. The intimacy of the atmosphere echoes the stylistic influences of the Italian Baroque . The debates about honesty and idealisation from the Victorian period reverberate right through to our own time, which I think resembles the Victorian period in quite striking ways, particularly when you look at the way nudity and body issues are discussed in the culture at large,” he says. “Even today there is this amazing mix of prudity and permissiveness. We’re so used to seeing millions of images of the naked human form, yet at the same time a single nude artwork in a gallery can still prove extraordinarily controversial at times.” Only recently in Australia, an art magazine was compelled by its publisher to conceal the nipples on a female nude painting it had chosen for its cover.
