About this deal

The 1954 and 1968 OS maps both show BSs indicating another BS had been added. These same maps continue to show the parish stones but with the PCWW stones having been added. Logically the the second BS at Siward’s Cross has to be a PCWW stone. It has been erected at the change in direction of the boundary and without it the PCWW boundary would miss Siward’s Cross by linking the stones to the NNW and SWW of the cross. It may be surprising to know that the building is now used by Mount Kelly School as a base for outdoor activities. Event open to novices and experienced orienteers alike. Dartmoor offers excellent, but challenging terrain, requiring appropriate care as it can become exposed in poor weather. If you are new to the sport, we will be delighted to see you, but you should enter one of our novice courses. This cross is by the side of the road from Moretonhampstead to Two Bridges, about 900metres north-west of the Warren House Inn. It was probably erected at this spot for two reasons: as one of the markers of this route long before the road was built, and to mark the boundary between the parishes of Chagford and North Bovey, [5] which runs roughly along the same line as the road. Nothing is known of the early history of the cross, although its crude shape suggests that it is very old. It was later used as a boundary marker for Headland Warren ("WB" carved on one face stands for "Warren Bounds") and as one of the bounds of the mining sett of Vitifer Mine. [6] Its survival here is probably due to its use as a boundary marker: two similar crosses further along the road towards Two Bridges are known to have been removed in the 19th century. Event day John and Myself met at 0730 to wake up controls for SIAC it was 100m visibility in the fog and heavy occasional showers in a very strong wind. All controls were good to go but due to the rain and a leat overflow in flood for safety reasons we decided to cancel the Yellow course. It was also decided on cagoules and whistles being compulsory. The building is said to have been used by the Royal Navy as a training base in around the 1960s and 70s. But after we previously spoke with a number of Navy officials, the use of the building does not appear to have been documented. This simple description is super informative. It confirm the name of the O Brook is derived from Oak Brook, and so we can assume that sometime in the past, this tributary of the Dart was wooded with Oak trees. Not so now. The oaks have gone, although there is a sprinkle of other shrubs and small trees, including willow, edging the valley bottom. It also tells us that this area was being used for tin extraction before the date of 1240 AD, and that these tin works were ‘Dryworkes’; a dry work being tin working of surficial deposits, found at the base of slopes and dry valley bottoms , as opposed to streamworks, where the tin is found in stream or river channels and floodplains. 7. After another 300 metres, pass through the second gate and follow the path all the way to Nun’s Cross across the open moor. That year the festival took place in Poland and more than 3 millions pilgrims celebrated the event. The week was filled with a series of religious meetings and group activities that concluded with the Pope’s public appearance in Kraków. For the nuns, this was a rare chance to spend time away from their strict routine. “The best thing was to walk around and meet people from everywhere. Even if we couldn’t speak the same language we were all there for the same purpose and it was good to stay together,” said Sister Francesca.

The initials stand for Vincent Thomas, an Exeter school which had some involvement in the area a few years ago, perhaps when the farm was used as a base for adventure training."

Said to have been the inspiration for great Grimpen Mire in Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle's 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.

The areas chosen were based on their technical difficulty, the interesting mine workings, gullies, pits, knolls, re-entrants and spurs. I wanted to make it challenging for the longer courses by concentrating groups of controls on specific areas to add confusion and prevent following the person in front which can easily happen on open moorland. Nun’s Cross Farm is a well known landmark on the ‘high Moor’ to most of us Dartmoor trekkers. The Dartmoor Rescue Group have used to as a base to co-ordinate call-outs on the Southern Moor and is currently used as a temporary bunk-house and can even be hired out.In this blog post, we will explore some of the funniest nun jokes and stories that have become part of popular culture. Funny Nun Jokes Clean It affords indeed a beautiful example of the way a popular tradition may at once preserve and disguise matter of authentic fact.” Finberg,1946 Mike had been working on the new map and concentrated on the areas that I was intending on using. By early July the map was complete and I transferred all controls over. After 40 metres or so join the gravel path following the Public Bridleway sign and pass through the pedestrian gate 20 metres ahead of you.
