About this deal

Category LD1: The highest level of protection of all occupants who might occupy the dwelling over the lifetime of the fire detection and fire alarm system. A system installed throughout the premises, incorporating detectors in all circulation areas that form part of the escape routes from the premises, and in all rooms and areas, other than those with negligible sources of ignition, such as toilets, bathrooms and shower rooms.

Below we outline the key changes to the BS 5839-6 Standard and the areas professionals should be aware of to ensure they’re offering individuals the highest standard of fire protection throughout all types of domestic properties. This applies to architects, building professionals, installers and enforcing authorities. Revised system grading for fire detection and fire alarm systems:First launched in 1995, British Standard BS 5839-6 has long established itself as a key reference standard for specifiers, architects and fire safety personnel, outlining the specific systems that should be installed for the purpose of life safety and property protection. Covering the implementation of fire precautions in domestic premises, including HMOs and sheltered housing, throughout both the dwelling units and common areas, the Standard is applicable to both new build and materially altered dwellings (in conjunction with regional building regulations) as well as existing properties. The recommendations can be applied to the fire detection components of combined domestic fire and intruder alarm systems, or fire and social alarm systems.

Grade D2 is required for new, owner-occupied buildings of up to three storeys, while rented properties both new and existing should comply with Grade D1. Existing owner-occupied buildings may use Grade F2 alarms. Premises with very large storeys (>200m 2), except single-storey buildings, require a Grade A alarm system. When it comes to powering electronic devices, there’s a lot to consider when choosing the right battery. D2 and D4 batteries are both part of the same family but have distinct differences that should be taken into consideration. Grade B – Fire detection and alarm system comprising fire detectors (other than domestic smoke alarms), fire alarm sounders, and control and indicating equipment to either BS EN 54-2 (and power supply to BS EN 54-4), or to Annex C of BS 5839 Part 6. Removed from the Standard. A system of one or more mains powered detectors, each with a tamper‑proof standby supply consisting of a battery or batteries (such as FireAngel’s SM-SN-1 and HM-SN-1 alarms). When it comes to batteries, not all models are created equal. D and D2 batteries are two of the most common types of batteries used in household electronics today, but the two are not interchangeable. Mixed system: Grade D1 Category LD2 in common areas and heat detector in each flat (room / lobby opening onto escape route) connected to the communal system, plus Grade D1 Category LD3 in each flat (not connected to the communal system) to protect the sleeping occupant.

A system of one or more battery-powered detectors powered by a user‑replaceable primary battery or batteries (such as FireAngel’s SB1-T alarm). The d2 battery is a double A size battery and is typically used in small applications such as toys, calculators, and remote controls. It is also commonly used in digital cameras and other electronics. D2 batteries are smaller, lighter and have a higher capacity, making them ideal for powering small electronics such as remote controls and cameras. The downside is that they don’t last as long as D4 batteries, which are larger and heavier, but have a lower capacity and longer life. D4 batteries are ideal for powering larger devices like radios and cordless tools.

D batteries were first invented in 1898. Today, they are also known as R20s, after their designation by standards body the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Mixed system: Grade A Category LD2 in common areas, in accordance with BS 5839-1: 2017 Category L2, and with connected heat detectors in bedsits which have cooking facilities. Additionally, Grade D1 Category LD1 in the bedsit itself (not connected to the communal system) to protect the sleeping occupant(s).
