Beaumont beat the previous world record of 123 days, set by Andrew Nicholson, by cycling 29,000km (18,000mi) across the globe visiting Russia, Mongolia, China, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, US and a number of countries in Europe. [15] Worlds of Fun, an amusement park in Kansas City, Missouri, was conceived using the novel as its theme. [38] Around the World in Eighty Days". Guardian.com. 5 January 2010. [17]I absolutely loved this! And now I'm wondering, How have I never read this or any of Jules Verne work, for that matter? He was so exact that he was never in a hurry, was always ready, and was economical alike of his steps and his motions. He never took one step too many, and always went to his destination by the shortest cut; he made no superfluous gestures, and was never seen to be moved or agitated. He was the most deliberate person in the world, yet always reached his destination at the exact moment. Not much left for me to say really Around the World in Eighty Days is a hoot and I recommend it. I will certainly read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth and beyond. Jules Verne is my kind of guy! In 1889, Elizabeth Bisland working for the Cosmopolitan became a rival to Bly, racing her across the world to try and achieve the global crossing first. [12] A rap at this moment sounded on the door of the cosy apartment where Phileas Fogg was seated, and James Forster, the dismissed servant, appeared.

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne | Goodreads

Verne spins a tale in which the reader will become so absorbed as to believe they are a part of the journey that must conclude in precisely 80 days. A master storyteller with the ability to captivate, entertain and provide some world history along the way, Verne deserves all the praises sung for him. That morning while playing whist at the club, Fogg and his friends overhear news that a robber disguised as a gentleman has stolen 55,000 pounds from the Bank of England. One of the members, Andrew Stuart, remarks that the robber is probably long gone, since the world is so large and there are plenty of places to hide. This comment piques Fogg’s interest. Fogg says the world “was once” large, but it is no longer so big. He says that it is now possible to travel across the world in eighty days due to modern advances in transportation. Fogg’s friends scoff at him, which emboldens him to make a daring wager: He bets 20,000 pounds, all the money he has in the bank, that he can travel around the world in eighty days. The men accept his wager and agree to find him at the Reform Club, in the same room, at the same time, eighty days later, on December 21 at 8:45 p.m. or they will collect the bet. anytime i read a classic just because people say it's a must-read, i call it "assigning myself homework"

Whether or not you've read the novel or watched the movie, Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days is so embedded in Western culture that just about everyone knows the basic plot premise: wealthy and reticent Englishman Phileas Fogg makes gentlemanly bet with his chums that he can travel around the world in 80 days and then sets off with his temperamental French servant to do just that. The companions arrive at Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland, take the train to Dublin and then a ferry to Liverpool, still in time to reach London before the deadline. Once on English soil, Fix arrests Fogg. A short time later, the misunderstanding is cleared up – the actual robber had been caught three days earlier in Edinburgh. Fogg has missed the train and arrives in London five minutes late, certain he has lost the wager. The main plot remains exciting, and the cheesy conclusion is as rewarding as any modern "happy end" could be: a b "Around the World in Eighty Days". Archived from the original on 26 January 2021 .
