About this deal

With the Uber-Gogen, some of the given letters aren't in the clue words so you can't pin them down so easily. As you go from puzzle to puzzle, first of all, the centre cell is left empty in the easiest, then another and so on until finally, you are down to just two clue letters, one of which is not in a corner so again, you only need logic to work out all of the letter positions.

Felix spoke to Imperial’s University Challenge team after its 285-145 demolition of Balliol College, Oxford. If I remember correctly I made it as an image on my Google drive and it was not possible to get the lines horizontal and vertical. The solver is given a list of words that they must be able to trace through the grid by following the paths between the letters. The Gogen puzzle has behind it a deceptively simple concept yet, with so many variants, each with their own characteristics, this a very interesting puzzle to do. and even without using the remaining clue (FIR) we know the final empty spot must house the final missing letter, F.Additionally, quite often, another letter is omitted as well so when you finish with the clue words, you still have a gap.

However, easy though they might be, there is a darker side to them - two types of Gogen puzzle that takes anywhere from a bit more thought right through to down-right difficult: the Uber-Gogen with deliberately omitted letters in the clues; and, the Ultra-Gogen where there are fewer and fewer clue letters in the puzzle, increasing in difficulty until there are only two puzzle letters left. Both of these types have real words as word clues although some people, who do not play a lot of word games, might find some of them a little obscure. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The X-Gogen books have one hundred puzzles - 25 each of UberGogen, UltraGogen, HyperGogen and HyperGogen+. I also worked as Derby's Pavement Artist, appearing on the television series 'What's My Line' and beating the panel.

to have a large print copy, you can use the extra space in the large print books as more working out space. The fewer letters you have in the clue words, the harder the puzzle is and as you progress through the book, that is what happens. The puzzles that you find in the newspapers only take a few minutes to complete so you will not find them here. We accept anything from one-time contributions to weekly columns; any contributions beyond writing (illustrations, graphic design, etc) is also gladly received. The UberGogen has the same clue cell arrangement of nine cells as the newspaper puzzles but not all of the letters are defined. The short of it is that you have a square, twenty five cell board and each cell carries a different letter of the alphabet, from A to Y.
