About this deal

Cause nothing says maybe my husband isn’t a “bad, bad man” like him wanting her to be the girlboss in charge of the corporate sex work center.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where Christine Coulson worked writing labels for exhibits. In contrast to Anya, a “Normal Woman” who was “the portrait of self-care, a pursuit the mothers in the online mom forums held sacred, and another maternal obligation for all but the lucky few to fail at spectacularly,” the protagonist considers herself capable of something more than boozy backyard brunches and poop talk. And yet I hold out hope for the book that Hogarth sees the ending as the real psychological horror story because of her hellish prophecy foreshadowing. All themes explored in a novel that spends too much time circling through characterization without fully fleshing them out. They are the “healthy, strong, intelligent, spiritual and sexual” beings who did everything: nurtured families, farms and businesses, dug graves, birthed babies, brought in harvests, staffed factories, led riots and held communities together…Gregory has the novelist’s eye for the quirky and the vivid; the wryness of a confident narrator. But I was surprised to find no mention of Mary Wollstonecraft, an important pioneer of women's rights. These are just a few of the startling findings you will learn from reading Philippa Gregory's Normal Women.

Dani is nowhere as good as the narrator of Motherthing and it's really missing that cutting edge to it. We also share information about your use of our site with our social media, advertising and analytics partners.

Now a recognised authority on women’s history, Philippa graduated from the University of Sussex and received a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where she is a Regent and was made Alumna of the Year in 2009. The real issue is the synopsis of the book which does it a disservice by centering around the supposed mystery of a missing person, making readers feel dissatisfied by its conclusion when that subplot isn't really the point of the book. A landmark work of scholarship and storytelling, Normal Women chronicles centuries of social and cultural change—from 1066 to modern times—powered by the determination, persistence, and effectiveness of women. Certainly not my favourite book this year but may be loved by a target audience I just don’t belong to!
