About this deal

While running shoes have a higher heel drop for more cushioning and support, training shoes like the Nano X1 are built for jumping, side to side movement, and traction. This means they’re a versatile staple that can take you anywhere from weightlifting and high intensity interval training to outdoor bootcamps and short stints on the treadmill. Despite the Reebok Nano X1 being very different than previous Reebok Nanos I still found plenty of things to like about it. Due to the nature of the training demands, there’s little outsole tread, making them less than ideal for running or training outdoors. Can we compare the Reebok to any of the other Metcon 6 versions? Here it is side by side with the latest AMP shoe.

There are 24 versions in men’s sizes, including the Nano X1 Grit, Pride and Lux, each of which all come in a number of color options. The flexibility in the upper is great, especially in the forefoot and overall I’m really impressed with the new knit material. However, this isn’t to say that these models aren’t stable enough for a majority of recreational lifters and CrossFitters. In each shoe, I’ve worked between 365-405 lbs on squats and over 450 lbs in deadlifts and overall they were pretty good. For example, I didn’t even notice much compression when pulling 505 lbs in the Nike Metcon 7s. And that’s a point in favor of the Nike show – it’s modular to some degree and you get to choose what you want. Drop the Hyperlift into the shoe below the midsole and you’ll get an additional 8mm of heel to toe drop. Neat. People tend to use the Nike Hyperlifts for wall balls, pistol squats, really anything that requires getting deep into the squat position. This is one area where the X1 stands out – at 12.1 ounces per shoe (US Men’s Size 11) it’s almost 2 ounces lighter than the Nike Metcon 6 (13.9 ounces). The Nano X1 is almost 2 ounces lighter per shoe, as compared to the Metcon 6. Lighter is better. In addition, the Reebok Nano X1 features Reebok’s signature Floatride Energy Foam midsole, while the Nike Metcon 7 utilizes Nike React Foam in the midsole. Both shoe’s midsole changes have decreased their overall stability slightly under the barbell.

Amanda, our fitness writer, runs with her dog 3 miles a few days a week. She decided to try the X1s out for mid-distance running and her verdict is that they aren’t the best choice for strictly cardio workouts.I like the flat laces. The tongue is slightly padded, which is a change from previous Nanos that Amanda doesn’t like, but it’s still skinny enough not to get in the way. This shoe is okay for lifting, and it works for a variety of activities. Since owning this model, I’ve trained up to 525 lbs in them, and their stability was okay. Were they as stable as something like the Reebok Nano X? Personally, I like this aspect of the shoe Reebok Nano X1 and I know it deviates from the hardcore CrossFit mentality of previous Nanos, but it is interesting seeing the different demographics that Reebok is reaching with this model compared to the previous Reebok Nanos. Reebok Nano X1 for Day-to-Day Wear and Shorter Runs In fact, it’s insane just how cushioned the Nano X1 Vegan’s are when you consider how good they are for lifting. Some criticism has been levelled at the Nano X1’s by hardcore lifters for not offering the same support as previous generations of the shoe. And while it’s true that I would never attempt a squat PB wearing the Nano X1 Vegan shoes - and you probably wouldn’t want to go higher than around 85% of your 1 rep max in them - I’d argue that you should be wearing specific lifting shoes for that intensity of training anyway.
