Elements of life and loss appear with re-birth emerging victorious. Veils are made from fishing nets, wild flowers sit surrounded by votive candles and offerings from nature, holy wells are adorned with ribbons, houses burst open their walls to reveal snapshot moments of past lives - a door to the stolen days.“I discovered three boxes of unresolved works in my studio and decided to work through the images and ideas presented. Some of the works were made some time ago and jolted my memory to re-work and finish the narratives. A period of time spent in Belfast over the past winter also gave me perspective on my work and relationship with Roundstone where I have almost exclusively worked for nearly two decades. I gained a deep appreciation of that relationship and the privilege of working in such a beautiful place. The inherent natural and built environment of Roundstone lends itself as a backdrop to my work, as does the island of Inishlacken. Both places have become cornerstones of my practice not only as the settings of ensemble figurative narrative works, but also as they hold an edgy mystique under the obvious pretty surface. I explore ambiguous stories informed by the subconscious, history and personal experience. There is a constant search for the hidden story, the untold and inexpressible.”Rosie McGurran is a Belfast born artist who received her degree in Fine Art in 1992. A former member of Queen Street Studios and a long standing member of the Royal Ulster Academy, she now lives and works in Roundstone in Connemara. The exhibition runs at the ArtisAnn Gallery from Thursday 4th July to Saturday 31st August with a preview on Wednesday 3rd July from 6 to 8pm.Admission is free. All art is available to buy, and may be collected/delivered after the exhibition ends. You can also buy art from this exhibition through the Own Art scheme; giving you interest-free credit over 10 months - and you still get to take the art home immediately the exhibition ends.
