About this deal

Cole’s production style is equally informed by childhood violin lessons and youth orchestra as it is by sample chopping and pad banks. He has been spitting rhymes and arranging beats since receiving his first sequencer at age 15. Self-taught on keyboard, Cole transitioned over the years from programming unrelenting bangers to playing breathing melodies, always trying to master more engineering techniques to compensate for strings and choirs. Unexpected Character: A few... His first album had Missy Elliott (who had been on a music hiatus), whilst his second had TLC, Amber Coffman, Mike Epps and Pastor Kearney Thomas, whilst if you bought the deluxe of that album you got a song which included a chorus (for no apparent reason) by 50 Cent.

Yes, we’ve all heard it plenty of times by now (it’s currently at No. 11 on the Hot 100), but Cole’s hit single “Power Trip” still sounds as good as ever in the context of the album. And it successfully introduced many of the sonic elements that tie “Born Sinner” together: crunchy, jumpy Timbaland-inspired drums, deep, rumbling bass, and soulful melodies, often sung by Cole himself — though Miguel provides a huge assist here, of course. a b Goble, Corban (June 21, 2013). Is She Gon Pop" contains a sample of "Chocolate Girl", written by Wayne Bell, as performed by The Whispers. Early-Installment Weirdness: His earlier works circa The Come Up often contained references to guns and violence, something that he actively avoids now.

Although “Born Sinner” is filled with stadium-sized beats, the album has intimate moments that shine as well. The stellar “Rich Ni–az” starts with a harp looping over the sound of running water, while Cole gives some of the most personal and relatable rhymes of the album, rapping about his mom moonlighting for money because his dad wasn’t around. Cole’s thoughts evolve constantly on the song: His middle finger to the titular “Rich Ni–az” turns into a tale of personal poverty and ultimately a comparison between his own bittersweet success and that of Basquiat or Kurt Cobain. In the end, it’s something of a mission statement for Cole’s career and his struggles throughout it: He wants success, but he doesn’t want to sell his soul for it. a b Scheinman, Ted (June 14, 2013).
