About this deal

So I got a cheap student CG from Carl Hellweg, who makes some very decent kid's guitars, and now have a beater though it is way more stressful on the airplane. Ukuleles have light gauge G and A strings that make for great substitute G strings for high G tuning. Nylon strings are also easier to play than steel strings, which is why they are an excellent choice for those just starting with the guitalele. The Guitalele is an instrument surrounded in mystique so let me debunk some of the confusion out there. If your guitalele has bridge pins, I recommend this set for the high G tuning – it’s what I use in the above video.

Red series also offer better intonation than traditional strings due to the fact they are thinner and do not have to be fretted as hard as traditional wound strings, which are also prone to oxidisation. I am not 100% happy with the sound of some tones in higher positions, but it's still an improvement. You can actually put steel guitar strings on a guitalele, but the added tension on the neck could damage the instrument so it’s worth checking if it has a truss rod, otherwise, steel strings are a no-no!

For this reason, you wouldn’t be able to jam along to your favorite tracks as what you’re playing will actually be much higher than what you’re listening to. With their unique look and revolutionary approach, Aquila have risen to the challenge and produced another excellent string set which resolves the age old problem of ‘density versus string gauge’ and come up with fantastic results. These strings work best in standard guitar tuning and that is my preference when playing popular Guitaleles like the Kanile'a GL6, Islander GL6, Flight GUT850 or Flight Carabao Guitaleles. Regardless, if you really want to have a steel string instrument tuned A to A, then you may be looking for a piccolo guitar which is exactly that! That was still a bit lose to play in standard tuning (important for practicing anything with voice while traveling) so I changed the saddle which raised the action.Of course, there is the option cut them off, but it’s an added task to do if you don’t actually need to! So if your guitalele has bridge pins, you’ll need to use a work around to install loop or tie end strings.

Unfortunately an increase in string diameter also has the disadvantage of increasing internal dampening resulting in a less responsive, duller sound.

The reason being the guitalele is designed for nylon strings, which exert much less string tension than on the neck of the guitar, and the guitar’s truss rod. I’d recommend the same ones I recommend for standard tuning which are Aquila’s since this step down tuning shouldn’t change tension all that much.
