About this deal

To find the best foundation formulas and brands, Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab scientists and editors scan the market for bases across price points, which are then label-masked to eliminate bias. Professional makeup artist evaluators test the foundations on factors such as dispensing, texture, application (spreadability, blendability, buildability) and coverage look and feel. Formulas that claim moisturization benefits, like tinted moisturizers and BB and CC creams, are also tested for skin hydrating effects using the Lab's Corneometer device. In the GH Beauty Lab's latest foundation test, scientists analyzed 190 submitted products to find the top 30 contenders for evaluation, quantifying 919 data points to find the best-performing formulas. These are some reflections that we entertain in the midst of the daily grind. It is not a luxury but a primordial incentive to give meaning to our archival work that is often repetitive, albeit necessary, to unravel a world of images for others to discover with us. It also serves to remind us of the institution we continue developing. The often invisible hands at work within the Foundation reveal many stories. Maha Kays recently joined AIF and is already evoking the legacy we each have a responsibility to carry.  How do we remember and how do we transmit that which is alive in us as an image, a feeling, a sound, a scent? We each carry the world in us and yet we crave to create traces collectively, in celebration of life but also to counter the solitude of pain. The urge to gather and link our individual journeys is monumental. We turn to spaces and movements where our worlds can meet, to leave a collective trace; to render memory tangible. Foundation is one of the essential parts of the structure. It is defined as that part of the structure that transfers the load from the structure constructed on it as well as its weight over a large area of soil in such a way that the amount does not exceed the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil and the settlement of the whole structure remains within a tolerable limit. Foundation is the part of a structure on which the building stands. The solid ground on which it rests is known as the foundation bed. Why a Foundation is ProvidedKaelen Wilson-Goldie, “Walid Raad and Akram Zaatari, Mapping Sitting: On Portraiture and Photography, 2002,” The Artist as Curator 3, Mousse, no. 44 (2015), accessed August 25, 2016, https://moussemagazine.it/ttac3-b. In strap footing, the foundation under the columns is built individually and connected by a strap beam. Generally, when the edge of the footing cannot be extended beyond the property line, the exterior footing is connected by a strap beam with the interior footing. Figure: Cantilever or Strap Footing 5. Raft or Mat Foundation This point was emphasized in the introductory text to the exhibition. It described Zaatari’s interactions with the former owners and originators of the photographs and contained direct quotes about their relationship to specific pictures, as well as the circumstances they were taken in. Parallel to the titles, dates, and names of the photographers that accompanied each picture in the show, the text contextualized the pictures on display while also accentuating the link between personal memory, history, and photography.

However, the alteration of the meaning of individual images when circulated publicly and the effects of the transfer from analog to digital media are issues that the AIF members thoroughly reflect on in their process of exhibition-making, as well as in their own individual artwork. They do so either by developing elaborate narratives using oral testimonies that historically contextualize the photographs on display, or by highlighting their materiality and the personal relationships the original photographers and former owners have had with them. Born in Qaladiza in Iraqi Kurdistan and currently based in Turin, Italy, Rawsht has been working on and processing the archive of his father, photographer Twana Abdullah, which brings together 20,000 photographic objects of different formats, including paper prints, negatives, and 35mm film rolls. Shot between 1974 and 1992, these images are an important record of the everyday life of the people of Kurdistan. Maha Kays // The Arab Image Foundation’s collections were an indispensable part of many research and projects I worked on prior to joining the Foundation. Its mission – to forge new pathways for photography and image practices, by ways of artistic creation, research and archiving - was instrumental in how I designed courses and seminars in the past years. The materiality of photographic objects at AIF, was a catalyser for my professional career, sixteen years ago.

PRO APPLICATION TIPS

I have known the foundation since its early days. Part of my family's collection mainly featuring their life in Ghana in the 1950s and 60s has been in the custody of the foundation since 2002. I remember taking a shoe box containing the prints to the foundation’s premises in Starco at that time. This collection along with more than 300 hundred others survived many disasters since then – car bombs in the vicinity, the Israeli invasion in 2006 and the most recent Beirut port explosion on 4th August 2020. An Uncanny Impulse - The Mohsen Yammine collection at the Arab Image Foundation, curated by Marc Mouarkech and Clémence Cottard (2017) After four years of extensive work that resulted in the digitisation of a significant part of AIF’s collection, the Albums Mission can be considered the jewel in the crown, especially when we consider all the challenges that we endured in 2020. The first project consists of 19 diptychs drawing from the AIF’s collections, produced in collaboration with the Beirut Printmaking Studio. These works were first shown in July 2022 in an exhibition titled Impressions from an Archive, presented at the Exhibition Research Lab in Liverpool in the framework – and with the support of – the Liverpool Arab Arts Festival.
