About this deal

I had articles published in The Green Parent, Juno, SEN Magazine, the Margate Mercury, The Local, The Psychologist and probably more that I have forgotten. This book reminded me of several aspects that have challenged me since home educating, which for me has been my inner terrain as an adult who has been schooled and raised in more traditional ways yet my heart has consistently guided me to enable my child to do life differently. The excerpt is from her new book, Changing Our Minds: How Children Can Take Control of Their Own Learning. We stop them from playing and actively exploring their interests, telling them it's more important to sit still and listen. When they refuse to cooperate with this, they are said to be suffering from school refusal, or perhaps school phobia.

Whilst I do agree that it is socially constructed like many things are I find it could really be misused by the "it didn't exist in my day" brigade. I so appreciate the work she put into compiling the information so that it’s not just opinion but full of information that’s so helpful in understanding unschooling. In the process, Dr Fisher asks us to reconsider our fundamental assumptions and views about how learning takes place, advocating for a more student-centred and strengths-based approach to education. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Biography: Dr Naomi Fisher is a clinical psychologist who specialises in trauma, autism and alternative education. This was a great book to read if you are interested in children’s learning, the school system and thinking about alternatives to the usual path. Sometimes, there is a requirement to just do the job at hand in the same way as everyone else and to very precise requirements. Even when people work at the weekend, they tend to do it in their own time and in their own way, and therefore have increased autonomy as compared to during the week.

If Dave didn’t think I was working fast enough, he would come and turn up the machine: thunk-thunk-thunk-thunk-thunk-squirt. Feeling like you have some control is more important than other factors, like how demanding your job is. You don't need to know anything about teaching to read and benefit from this book, but if you do it will make new connections between all the things you already knew. Faces came and went, and we only got to know each other if, by chance, we were sent on our break at the same time. Just because some jobs have few choices is no reason to spend twelve years making children practise feeling powerless. To be honest, I downloaded this one because it was the only one available on Audible and I thought I’d give it a go. She is the mother of two and the author of several books on psychology, education and mental health. Profiteroles came along the belt, I had to grab two, put them on the spikes, and – ‘thunk’ – the machine filled them with cream. Now that schools have reopened, most seem to have forgotten how ridiculous the material their children are having to learn actually is, and also just how counterintuitive the way it is they are expected to learn it - parents are just relieved it’s no longer on them. I’ll then discuss several ways in which children struggle emotionally, with some ideas as to what to do to help.
