With newer processors already on the market, I didn’t expect to see AMD ship any more Ryzen 5000 Series processors with 3D V-Cache. Regardless, it seems that AMD decided it was worthwhile to ship one more, even though it’s a relatively limited release. At the same time, though, I find sound logic behind AMD’s decision to release the new Ryzen 5 5600X3D now. As for competition, the Ryzen 5 5600X3D seems set to take on Intel’s price point for DDR4-equipped Core i5-13400 systems. The Micro Center’s bundle deal looks pretty tempting and appears to offer better value than a similar Core i5-13400 configuration. The product is good news for owners of AM4 motherboards. AMD has been moving to the AM5 standard for the company’s latest Ryzen 7000 chips, including the 7000X3D series. But last year, CEO Lisa Su nevertheless said her company planned on supporting the AM4 platform for years to come. It looks like the 5600X3D is one of the results.

Permanently disabling them enables the processor to run without issue, and it enables AMD to take a processor that would otherwise be headed to the recycling bin and turn it into a marketable product. Power consumption is tested by measuring the full power draw of the test system using a Kill-A-Watt wall meter. Due to the differences in motherboard, these numbers need to be taken with a pinch of salt except when comparing chips on the same platform.
The Ryzen 5 5600X3D overall didn’t use noticeably less power than other AMD processors. A lot of this comes down to its compatibility with reasonably priced DDR4 memory. AMD has pledged to continue supporting this platform for budget-tailored systems, which is reassuring. You'd expect this chip to be made up from those dies unable to meet the requirements for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which may explain why such a limited launch. It's extremely possible there simply aren't that many of those to go around, as the Ryzen 7 5800X3D was more or less a test run for the 3D V-Cache chips later on in the Ryzen 7000-series.
