About this deal

In this latest installment, like the previous book, Amos is still working for the FBI. On his way to a meeting in the J. Edgar Hoover Building (world headquarters for the FBI) he witnesses a murder/suicide just outside its doors. His former FBI colleagues, Alex Jamison, Ross Bogart, and Todd Milligan, are once again brought together to solve this horrible crime. For romance fans, there's a budding love story in the novel, which leads to friction between the female characters.....but not for the reasons you might think. There's also an interesting theme about the damage caused by sports-enhancement drugs, which I found intriguing. He heard a noise somewhere. Then he heard it again. And another time. Repeats of the same sound over and over. It was two distinct sounds actually, one a solid thud and the other like something scraping against something.

Something sinister is going on in Baronville. The rust belt town has seen four bizarre murders in the space of two weeks. Cryptic clues left at the scenes - obscure Bible verses, odd symbols - have the police stumped. Kudos, Mr. Baldacci, for another wonderful book. I know you have plans for new and exciting series in the fall, but I hope you will not forget this series, which has been gaining momentum since its inception. From my progress notes: "Roughly half-way through, I am being distracted by the "ordinariness" of the writing, with some of the dialogue being almost banal. I am a fan of David Baldacci and to date I have read/listened to over 20 (novels) of his prodigious output. At this stage, "The Fix" is unlikely to rate very highly with me." As for Berkshire, she seems to be an enigma. Despite having a modest salary, the teacher owned a multimillion dollar condominium and a very expensive Mercedes.

There was justifiable homicide, the best example of which was self-defense. There you intended to harm another and you were doing so for your personal benefit, but the law said you had the right to defend yourself, which disqualified it from being murder. In 2020, Baldacci launched his own podcast, “David Baldacci’s Power of Story,” where he interviews fellow authors and discusses the craft of writing. This book is fast paced and highly unpredictable. With in the first five minutes of starting this book the story takes off and there is a head long rush until it comes to the end.

The harshest legal consequences of all were reserved for acts of murder, because what was more precious than human life? With his football career irreversibly over, he had gone on to become a cop and then a homicide detective in his hometown of Burlington, Ohio. He had been married to a wonderful, lovely woman named Cassandra, or Cassie as he always called her, and they had had a beautiful child named Molly. The story itself was complex as well. There were, in fact, a few parallel storylines going in the book, and, at times, I had trouble keeping them apart. There were really a lot of things going on compared to the shadow of a town that the place has become over the years. But, I guess, if you’re searching for trouble and poking the bee’s nest, you will definitely find it.

In The Fallen, David Baldacci gives us many new characters to enjoy. However, I'm not going to lie, I missed the rest of the team. From the new characters, I liked John Baron. He had an intriguing personality. He was astute, well spoken and had learned to defend himself. He had a rotten deal just by born into the Baron family. David Baldacci has been writing since childhood, when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she’d given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then.”) On the first night of their vacation, Amos sees something in the house closest to them. He goes immediately to investigate it. His search yields two dead bodies. When the cops get there, Amos learns this is not the first murder. There are six more unsolved murders. Despite being on vacation, Amos can't walk away for them. He needs to find the truth about the murders. His instinct is telling him they have to be related and that Baronville is hiding many dark secrets. In the center of it all is the Barons and their latest descendant, John Baron. Electrical wiring had gotten mixed with liquid. He had investigated homicides involving arson and the smell was unmistakable. There was a fire in there. This is the fourth book in the Memory Man series and while not my favorite it was entertaining and timely. On top of that, Berkshire's searchable past ends ten years ago, beyond which there is no record of her. Although I enjoyed it I didn't feel it quite lived up to the previous two in the series but appealed more to me personally because I enjoy the characters.
