About this deal

Since I couldn’t test it out with hard turns, I didn’t have any issues, but I wonder how these would be out on technical terrain. Among its competitors, the Lone Peak 6 sits on the heavier end of the spectrum, but as I’ll explain, it both feels much lighter and is capable of less (in certain regards) than many of these shoes.

Dom: Over the years, many of the Lone Peak updates have not offered much benefit over previous versions. Altra never seem to have paid much attention to weight, and their generously sized toe box has traded off foot retention for comfort and toe splay. ALEX: I have zero qualms about this one besides my ongoing complaint about a lack of unisex colorways. I’ve read in some places that a trail shoe may not give enough arch support and that it isn’t good on pavement.Even with a well-executed transition to the zero drop experience, there are plenty of factors that can lead to a runner just not feeling comfortable. Fleet Feet reviewers tested everything from technical singletrack to smooth dirt roads (even a bit of pavement) with the Altra Lone Peak 6. There is a lot of room for natural foot splay and placement, minimal cushion, and solid grip for various terrain.

Fans of the Altra Lone Peak 5 will be happy to learn that the Lone Peak 6 improves upon the previous platform without reinventing the wheel. It’s a good point made that every model does not (and should not) need a carbon plate and BOA to be considered a quality shoe. I have found some previous versions of the Lone Peak to feel a little sloppy on technical trails and insecure with heavier packs. Perhaps more importantly, it helped legitimize Altra’s unique approach to footwear design, namely their decision to pair zero-drop midsoles with wide toeboxes across all of their models. The stitched rand on the toebox is pliable to the touch, which helps keep the forefoot comfortable on long days while providing a little protection for toe bumps.Even with a bed of soft cushioning and a host of protective features, the Lone Peak 6 remains lightweight and nimble. So it’s great that all the stuff we loved about the LP5 is unchanged, but why jump to pick up the LP6 when I can wait and pick up the 5 on sale? I can’t help but think the Lone Peak 6’s flexibility – which I’ve applauded heavily throughout this review – enhances the shoe’s traction as well. Most running shoes and hiking shoes place extra cushioning under the heel to soften your landing, support your feet, and take pressure off your lower back. So instead of testing out the Lone Peak 6 on the trails like my fellow reviewers, I had some great long runs around the snow and ice-covered harbor promenade in my trail shoes.

Heat-welded overlays like these potentially add some durability — after about 50 miles on mostly moderate trails, the upper still shows minimal sign of wear, but I’m dubious about their long-term sturdiness. I would recommend this shoe to anyone who loves to feel the earth beneath their feet, need a wider package, and soft ground enthusiasts — it would be a little harsh for constant rocks and roots. For the outsole of the LP6, Altra uses their MaxTrac, which utilizes multidiretions chevron lugs with a much improved compound. I know I said above that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, so I realize I am contradicting myself here. For me, if Altra can improve this, I think the Lone Peak would set a new standard for distance trail running shoes. In 2022, Altra debuted a new composition of midsole foam, and the Lone Peak 6 was one of the first models to receive it.
