About this deal

Here’s where Samsung wins, even if images from its phones aren’t ‘the best’ when it comes to pixel-peeping: it has the easiest to use and most fun smartphone camera. That still counts for something.

The sensor in the Xiaomi uses pixel binning to combine four pixels. This means that you capture 27MP images from the 108MP sensor, but when the pixels are combined you’re effectively getting four times the light-gathering per pixel. The Samsung version, on the other hand, combines nine pixels via a ‘nonabinning’ method. Combining these nine pixels gives you 12MP images from the 108MP sensor, but should result in 9x the light gathering. This means that the S20 Ultra has the advantage when it comes to low-light conditions, and it really shows in testing. Comparing the two, the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s low-light pictures have greater contrast and manage to soften the highlights more effectively. The Xiaomi also doesn’t benefit from the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s abundance of new camera features. Swiping anywhere on the viewfinder portion of the screen to flip between the front and rear cameras – to us, this acts like a big button, replacing that tiny ‘flip’ icon that's in a random corner of nearly every other phone.

10x Optical Zoom & 8K Video

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is also the first phone to record 8K resolution video. You need an expensive 8K TV to view it, but it’s nice to see that 8K recording is starting to make its way to smartphone cameras. It’s worth noting, however, that the file sizes are much larger than regular 4K or 1080p footage. So how fast is 5G on the S20 Ultra? Exactly 66 times faster than the 4G LTE iPhone 11 Pro Max we tested right next to Samsung's phone, at least in New York City. We got 1.9Gbps on Verizon's mmWave network in Bryant Park, which broke our previous record of 1.6Gbps on the Galaxy S10 Plus in the same spot. Well, currently the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra looks like one of the best smartphones ever released. It has the best display of any phone ever (factually, not subjectively), a 5000mAh battery, a 6.9-inch display and a slightly ridiculous 12/16GB RAM. Some people have launched complaints about dust getting in the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra camera housing, though we haven't experienced much that in our extensive testing. The complaints appear to be – mostly – limited to Korea.

READ NEXT: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip hands-on review Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra review: 108MP camera, Space Zoom and 8K video As for the quality of the screen, this is one of Samsung’s Dynamic AMOLED panels – first seen in last year’s Galaxy S10 – with a native screen resolution of 3,200 x 1,440 and a sharp pixel density of 511ppi. As usual with Samsung phones, there are two screen modes to choose from, although I found the ‘Natural’ setting was the most colour accurate during my testing, with a 98% sRGB gamut coverage, a total volume of 104% and an average Delta E of 2.35. The new Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a camera that’s ready to take your extreme close-up – and a lot of your money. Samsung’s business-class phone has certainly become an investment, to the point where you may ask yourself “Do I really need an ‘everything phone’?” In fact, there’s currently no Android phone on the market that’s any faster than this. I say Android because Apple’s A13 Bionic – which powered the iPhone 11 lineup – still has everything beat. Not that you should worry though, as the S20 Ultra is powerful enough to handle absolutely anything you care to throw at it, and then some.We discovered that you can’t have 8K and Super Steady; in fact, Super Steady didn’t work in 4K either – it’s still a 1080p affair. And 8K is limited to 24fps, so you’re not going to get all the bells and whistles you do with 4K and Full HD video. FDD LTE B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(AWS), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B12(700), B13(700), B17(700), B18(800), B19(800), B20(800), B25(1900), B26(850), B28(700), B32(1500), B66(AWS-3) At the end of the day, this question will completely depend on what you want from your phone. If you want the best of the best, in the form of Samsung's most powerful phone yet, the Ultra will be the phone for you.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G - idealo

This is a section where there could be some differences if you have the Qualcomm version of the Galaxy S20 Ultra or the Exynos one. There were huge gulfs in battery life between the models of both the S10 and Note 10, with the Snapdragon variant seemingly lasting a lot longer. All my thoughts here are from the European Exynos version. Over the course of my week with the S20 Ultra my battery life experience has changed numerous times. With the 120Hz refresh rate on and two SIMs (one 5G) enabled I struggled to make it through from 8am to 10pm without getting nervous and topping things up before I left the office.

Instead of waffling on for much longer, I’d like to close things out by simply saying that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is the most impressive Android smartphone that’s ever been released. Not only is it remarkable in its approach to offering new features, but the entire experience is so well refined that Samsung barely places a foot wrong. Distance. It used to be a problem for smartphone cameras, which were incapable of making distant subjects look anything other than, well, distant.
