About this deal

This is a very gentle, WWII romance. This probably wouldn’t be my go to genre, but I found it a very easy and enjoyable read. This is my first book by Katie Flynn, I think I was expecting something different, a bit grittier in parts I guess, it was nice… even the events such as the bombing were written lightly. It was a pleasurable book however I don’t think I would read anything by this author again, that’s just my personal opinion.. Katie Flynn is a very popular author with a huge fan base. Cadi Williams nightmares have returned of the almighty explosion at the greyhound public house. Now staying and working with Maria and Bill Shankley at the B&B in Derby Road her troubled sleep worries her as she applies to join the WAAF with Jez in the RAF she maybe a bit closer to him so they can see more of each other she misses him so much. Cadi joins the WAAF and makes friends and settles into her new role well. The book explores the war roles for women, the homelife and bombing causing housing issues, friendships made and strengthened and the issues many people faced. Liverpool, 1941: After German bombs shatter the life Cadi has built for herself in Liverpool, she's more determined than ever to sign up and do her bit. Joining the WAAF also means she is closer to her beau - until Jez is sent thousands of miles from home. . .

The festive follow-up to The Rose Queen , from beloved Sunday Times bestselling author Katie Flynn. The Winter Rose had many sub-plots that weren't closed in a satisfying way for example, the Daphne - Aled - Cadi plot, Izzy's father Eric wasn't explored - why was he murdered? Who was he involved in? The plot twist of Izzy and Jez as sibling was out of the blue after saving Raquel. I liked the idea of these female characters feeling empowered with their war work, but this empowerment is undermined by their attention to gossip.

The Winter Rose: The brand new heartwarming Christmas 2022

A different type of read from those I normally lean towards, this was a delightful break from one world inhabited by horror, to another, more real one, set at the start of the second World War. The village in which they have grown up is very insular and protected, there is a path expected of them which they step off of when they embark on the journey of a lifetime to Liverpool. Brilliant character in Cadi , strong yet vulnerable , in love with her partner Jez but now torn away from each other having to ensure the perils of the war. While Jez is in Africa, someone from the past starts spreading vicious rumours that could threaten their relationship, and Cadi finds herself torn between keeping secrets and telling the truth to protect those she holds dear. Set just before the War, in a little village in Wales, two friends are part of the yearly celebrations with Cadi being The Rose Queen. Cadi has her heart on escaping her village and making something of her life, and not settling down and marrying Aled, the farmers son, which is her dad's desire. The heatwarming festive follow-up to The Rose Queen, from beloved Sunday Times bestselling author Katie Flynn. Thank you for sharing thus book with me, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It begins before the Second World War in Wales as 2 young girls become bored by the life mapped out for them in their community and long to travel further with the approaching storm clouds of war they head off to Liverpool to sign on for the WRAF despite being under age. As they are unsuccessful, the story takes unexpected turns through the war it is a lovely heart warming story.

I wholeheartedly recommend this stunner of a war time romance and the search for a meaningful life. Just loved it. The four friends have followed their own paths but have stayed in touch. Jez has joined the RAF and Poppy and Izzy have joined the Waaf, leaving Cadi behind in Liverpool helping out in the new hotel with Maria. Cadi has also signed up and is waiting for her papers to go and join the WAAF. Cadi has always wanted more for herself than scraping a living with a husband and babies and at the grand old age of 17 she decides to take a leap and head for the bright lights if Liverpool with her friend Poppy. Her father is not impressed as he had his sights on her marrying Aled, the son of a farmer, so she would have financial stability. Marriage is not something Cadi is up for any time soon. Liverpool brings a tough life for her following the years of the great world war’s end. Kitty finds that she’s always starving and has only rags to wear. She’s the oldest child in her family and takes her drunken mother’s rages while dreaming of running off to find a life that is better than the one she lives. The story does deal with some dramatic and dark themes, such as domestic abuse, poverty, the dangers of mining and the Liverpool Blitz. However, the narration is never gritty or too intense, so if that’s your thing this probably isn’t the book for you.Cad and her best friend Poppy are both desperate to leave their small mining community, so when war is declared the girls see a chance to escape. A lovely, easily read and meaningful tale written by one of my favourite authors, can't wait for the next book!
