About this deal

All this activity was at it’s most intense in February and March 1921 when the fight was really taken to the British all over Cork City and County. In all thirty three members of the Third West Cork Brigade were killed in the period from August 1920 to July 1921 when a ceasefire was called. Eighteen Volunteers were killed in the just over two months from January 17 th 1921 to March 22 nd. Three of these were arrested and shot by British troops and three more Volunteers were shot in their beds. King, Seamus J. (1998). The Clash of the Ash in Foreign Fields: Hurling Abroad. Boherclough, Cashel, Co. Tipperary: S. J. King. ISBN 978-0-9533513-0-5. OCLC 40820752. The Old cemetery in Clogagh where Charlie Hurly is laid to rest is a beautiful rural setting about ½ mile on the Kilbrittain side of little Clogagh village. It is well sign-posted and well worth a visit. The smaller head-stone on the front right bearing the inscription “ Hurley “ belongs to his parents John and Mary who are also buried there. Also buried there is his brother Liam who pre-deceased him in 1918 and was an active Officer in the West Cork Volunteer movement.

The sides met in this year's National League final on 9 April when goals from Gillane and Barry Nash helped the Shannonsiders clinch a convincing 2-20 to 0-15 win. The smart money suggests the outcome will be a lot closer three-and-a-half months on.

Charlie Hurley’s funeral, the scene in Clogagh in the dead of night, and indeed the tension of the times he lived and died in, are vividly described by Tom Barry in the book “ Rebel Cork’s Fighting Story ” I've been at this 10 years and every year it gets harder and harder, but now in this past six months it has been critical - it's almost impossible to get. The opening 20 minutes provided three scores. This trio of white flags - Michael and Brian Hurley on target for the Haven, Luke on the mark for Nemo - arrived in the opening eight and a half minutes. It meant a third of the half passed without any flag at all. Part of the project is the development of a robotic arm that mimics the human arm (biomimicry) for testing how the hurley and sliotar interact with each other, as well as the investigation of alternative materials for the manufacturing of hurleys. "Rules and regulations need to be developed such that new hurleys will be safe and also keep the game within the playing conditions and what's appropriate for the game," says Brabazon. From RTÉ Archives, meet the Connolly brothers from Castlegar who are champion hurlers, Gaeilgeoirí and hurley makers (broadcast May 7, 1982)

Currently the only specification in the rule-book regarding hurleys is that they must not measure more than 13cm at their widest point, but this isn’t enforced, and nowadays most adult hurleys are between 16 and 20 at their widest point. So the two-point gap, while allowing for the fact that it was a league game, represents progress for Cork, who could have won the game with some better finishing, according to Hurley. Daly says it all comes down to the disease threatening the ash. "In 2012 all the state agencies were saying that Ireland would be self-sufficient in ash by 2022. They’re now more or less saying that ash could be wiped out by 2032. So that's a phenomenal turnaround in 20 years." Yet they’re all still hand-finished in the workshop behind Willie McCauliffe’s house, where Tony, and occasionally his dad (although Willie is officially retired) skilfully sand down each camán.

Owing to the war, it was not possible to have the fighting men of West Cork at a public funeral. We had to choose between giving him a public funeral or one where only armed Volunteers would be present. We chose the latter as we knew he would wish it to be so”. King, Seamus J. (1998). The Clash of the Ash in Foreign Fields: Hurling Abroad. p.129. ISBN 978-0-9533513-0-5. Measure Up For Correct Hurley Size". Faughs.ie. Faughs GAA Club. 22 February 2015 . Retrieved 4 March 2020. We used to use longer hurls because you needed them to generate more power. They are shorter now, harder to hook.Proposed link to video of Star Player articulating why he loves playing Hurling for his Club and County/> Well, it used to be. We have already covered the complexities of the modern sliotar (slitothar?) in some depth but today we look at the noble camán and its growing variety of incarnations.
