About this deal

long, 3″ wide strips of fabric(I would use a solid color.) You should have enough left over in scraps from cutting the fabric, but you might want to get a little extra just in case. Top stitch round the edge. Then stitch round again 1/2″ . This creates atube for feeding the drawstring through. Do you have children, nephews, friends who love playing with cars? Why not create a DIY drawstring car play mat, perfect for storage of cars, plus play. I love how with the addition of a drawstring means the play mat pulls up into draw string bag. So easy to tidy away when the child has finished playing. Starting at one end of the fabric tube, “thread” the rope through until you reach the other end. You’ll have to do a bit of tugging and adjustment until the mat lays flat and the tubing isn’t bunched up.

Following the marks you’ve made earlier for the straps, pin the straps onto the Main fabric, then fold over the Inner fabric to sandwich the straps in between. Fold both Main & Inner fabric pieces half, and then half again to create a quarter. Place patter on top of fabric and cut according to pattern. After looking at the tutorial, I also discovered the name of this bag – a Swoop Bag. These are pretty pricey, so I was excited to see if I could make one for a fraction of the price. Make clean up a breeze after playtime is over with this reversible drawstring play mat. Reversible usage opens up opportunities for storytelling, such as blue for the sea, and orange for land. What you need Fold one piece of fabric into quarters. Each edge needs to be at least 21″ (or one inch more than what you want the radius of the finished product should be. Iron the edges, and then starting at one corner, make multiple 20″ marks in an arch across the fabric. The more marks you have, the easier it will be to connect the lines and cut! After you’ve connected the line, cut along the line. The size is plenty large for us, so the instructions below do have exact measurements. It’s about 40inches in diameter, but if you want it a different size, you should be able to easily adjust the instructions below. Let’s finish the play mat. Create two small button holes on the external fabric 3/4″ in from the edge. So, by all means, this is not a super unique and original idea, but I think I put my own unique twist on it. Clip into the seam allowance. Press. Turn right sides out and press, including turning in the edge of the turning gap. On the circle of fabric that you want on the bottom of the bag (but will ultimately be on the outside when it’s cinched up), pin the tube of fabric around the entire fabric. There should be about a 5″ gap between the ends of tube (if there isn’t, just cut off a few inches from one of the ends and re-sew.) Make sure to pin the raw edge of the tube on the outside of the circle.

Here’s the tutorial — it really is pretty simple and should just take 1-3 hours (depending on how fast you are!) I think this would be a great birthday gift or even a baby shower gift. Decide on fabric choices for each building, tree, shape. Iron your sheet of glue onto the reverse. Cut out the right size in the fabric and then iron into place on the playmat. Use parchment paper to protect your iron. When complete, this playmat measures approximately 19.5 x 19.5 inches. If you’d like to make a larger custom size, you may either enlarge the pattern at a copy shop, or use the instructions in the PDF pattern to create your own pattern. pieces of fabric that are about 43″ wide and 56″ tall in coordinating colors (Fabric used in this tutorial – Scenic Route and Colbalt. These are no longer available online, but they are from Riley Blake Designs, which has the CUTEST fabric. The Oh Boy!or Harvest Friends Owlwith some polka dot cotton would be PERFECT for this project.)

Sew 1/4″ stitch around the circle, starting at the beginning of the part you left unpinned and stopping at the other end right before the gap. This is my sketched design. I found this very helpful when placing the fabric shapes to create the various areas. Using a bodkin (or a bobby pin), thread the canvas ribbon from one slit opening to the next. Repeat with the other side. Start by measuring a circle in your fabric. Fold your fabric into quarters. Measure out in a quarter circle with tailors chalk. I added string to mine, holding it tight at the central point then drawing out and round. Once you have one circle use it as your template for the other circle. My circles are 50″across (25″ string). Due to the size I suggest usingfabric glue to hold them in place, then stitching along the edges in zigzag to firmly hold them in place. Paint on your central markings on the roads with fabric paint. The pattern comes with a full tutorial and color photos in an easy-to-print PDF. Pattern pieces are computer-generated and color-coded for easy cutting.Pattern includes layers so you can just print off the size you need, an A0 format for printing at a copy shop and a projector format. Stitch all around the circle, 3/8 inches in from the edge. Leave an opening of about 4 inches for turning the whole thing inside out. Fold the fabric in half and sew down the long edge until you have a long tube. You don’t need to worry about the raw edge, as it will be covered in the end. Sew them together into one large strip. Make sure to put the edges right side together, so the seam doesn’t show.
